There has been an animated version of the Hobbit for many years. Moving to the Hobbit forum.

I would love to see The Hobbit made into a live-action film. I haven't heard any rumors about actually making one, but there's always a chance!

I take it back. What I read tells how PJ originally tried to do the Hobbit, got turned down for cost, then approached New Line who said yes to a much more expensive LoTR. No Hobbit movie yet!

There's been an animated The Hobbit movie for years. Try looking for it in a pawn shop or other used goods store, or maybe try your luck and find it online. There is also an animated LOTR movie, which follows the event of Frodo and Co. from the FOTR to TTT. I've heard rumours that there will be a The Hobbit video game coming out for Nintendo Gamecube, but that's a slightly different story.

Ooooh! I thought that it would be so cool to see The Hobbit acted by real people. And maybe a Silmarillion film too! Hmmm.
I wonder if there is a Silmarillion movie...Anyways It would be great to see how all the dwarves and Beorn. (Did you know Beorn comes from a dannich word Bjorn that means bear?) Ok I think I'm gonna stop before I get too much off the subject...

New Line owns the rights to the Hobbit. Given Hollywood's penchant for milking a success, you'll probably see the Hobbit as a prequel to LotR, if the TT and RotK movies gross even as nearly as much as FotR.

Gil- galad was an elven king.
Of him the harpers sadly sing:
the last whose realm was fair and free
between the mountains and the sea.

His sword was long, his lance was keen,
his shinig helm afar was seen;
the countless stars of heaven's field
were mirrored in his silver shield.

But long ago he rode away,
and where he dwelleth none can say;
for into darkness fell his star
in mordor where the shadows are.

This thread was taken from the Grey Book on Ian Mckellens web site concerning the makeing of the Hobbit

THE HOBBIT
From: Larry Flock

Q: When Peter Jackson announced he was doing Lord of the Rings, he said that if the trilogy was successful, he would go back and do The Hobbit. It has been a couple of years since this was brought up--i.e. FAQ--so I pose the question again Sir Ian. Have you heard anything recently about bringing The Hobbit to the screen, and would you be interested in reprising your role? Also do you think that Ian Holm would be interested in coming back to be the younger Bilbo, as he plays the younger Bilbo in the Lord of the Rings prologue? P.s. My wife wants to know if they gave you an extra bit of length for your nose in the Gandalf make-up---she says yes and I say no.

A: I recently asked about the film rights to The Hobbit, which seem to be somewhat controlled by Peter Jackson, as far as I can tell. I hope that's the case because obviously he should have first refusal at translating the novel into a movie. I should be intrigued to return to Middle-earth, even though it involved putting on Gandalf's nose, which is even more distinctive than my own, tell your wife. I thought it might be possible to make a really long screen version, probably for television, with every episode of the book covered week by week in a multitude of episodes. Ian Holm -- who was proud to look so young as well as so old as Bilbo in The Fellowship of the Ring -- even he might think the young Bilbo of The Hobbit was unlikely casting for an actor of his age.

It would be good seeing how much younger Bilbo looked (Even though you can see in th flash back of FotR)
Maybe Gandalf but he might not look that different.

I always figured they would make it after the LotR because he wrote it after.
I wanna see beorn, I think he would be cool, and the lonely mountain. It would all be good.

Ah, ah, ah! The talking purse! (best part) I thought "younger" Bilbo's hand looked old as the hills! Didn't fool me.

I agree.
In the "prologue" of the film when he picks up the ring it looks very old and wrinkled. It also looks and of big and squishy like jelly but thats probably just me.

I personaly would like to see a movie of the hobbit, but definatly not by Peter Jackson. As far as things such as shadow and darkness, evil and destruction ect. he is a genius. But he would mar the complicated simplicity(yes there is such a thing) that is The Hobbit. Yes there is war and destruction , but there is a good natured, simplistic and comforting feeling there that i believe he could not capture. I would love to see someone elses rendetion though.

That is the question isn't it. And one that i have no current solution to. I guess its easy to say who shouldnt do it, but its quite different coming up with who should. I can't think of any American Film directors right now who fit the bill so to speak. My hope would be probably for someone unlooked for (which usualy proves to be the best kind of hope) with fresh ideas and a clean slate.

But thats not very helpful to anyone. So the short answer would be *shrugs*
