Harry Potter is disturbing.

And there is a series of books which they call the Lord of the Rings of the new millenium. How can they dare?

A lot of Michael Crichton's books could be called disturbing at one point or another, although they're great. Just never read The Andromeda Strain right before bedtime. *shudder*

I loved BFG! Granted I read it when I was still in primary school, but I thought it was great.

I think the most disturbing book I've ever read was H - The Autobiography of a Child Prostitute & Heroine Addict (Christiane F)

"twas a harrowing tale of a 13 year old girl in Berlyn who became addicted to drugs, first Mary Jane, then hash and it eventually progressed to H. In order to sustain her addiction she turned to prostitution. Her boyfriend also became a prostitute to pay for his habit. I thought it was quite scary as the book was written by 2 child psychologists after interviewing Christiane at a police station after she had been arrested again.

This book also rates as one of my favourite books, even though it was so disturbing.

That's the one! Could I heck remember the proper title of that book!

Yup, bit of a harrowing read that one........there's another along the same lines...But I can't remember the title of it either...

*thinks he needs to go back to bed*

Answered an unasked question did I?

Iron Parrot - Mein Kampf was terribly disturbing I agree, but you should read some of the books about the Anglo-Boer wars in SA and what happened to the boer women and children in the British concentration camps, not to mention what they did to the Zulu & Xhosa people (among other things they would give the women in the concentration camps flour to make bread, but they'd add ground pices of glass to it, so their intestine would be cut to bits or they'd kill babies by smashing their heads against wagon wheels).

I think ALL books about war & the way people seem to regress to an almost animal like state are disturbing. Also the tales from the Vietnam war, American Civil War etc.

I reread parts of that book recently and, at the age of sixteen, I *still* like it. It's definitely creepy, especially if you're eight, not to mention hilarious. Hmm... maybe I'm just a dork.

Have any of you ever read The Butcher Boy by Patrick McCabe or seen the film (directed by Neil Jordan)? Very disturbing indeed *shudders at recollection*

I don't know maybe I have some sort of problem, but I don't very many books disturbing. I have read Clockwork Orange and Lord of The Flies and I thought they were quite good and not very disturbing. Right now I am reading Filth by Irvine Welsh; it's good, and I guess it could be considered disturbing.

Filth, is a pretty disturbing book, but it is another book about possiblilities (if the scenario of the book were real, it would be disgusting).

sorry to be off topic but i just watched Taxi Driver and reading bout that Child prostitute stuff just clicked coz that is one disturbing movie for me... i think it is mainly the actors coz i dont see Harvey Keitel being in the pedephial ring and i definatly dont see Jodie Foster as the 14 year old prostitute. gotta love De Niro though always such a good actor..
ummm anyway disturbing books for some reason i find a lot of short stories are disturbing and open a lot of uncomfortable questions but maybe thats just me

'The Others' by James Herbert completely freaked me out, as do most of his books.

Hmm... is that the book that inspired the movie? Or am I just an illiterate fool?
