James Herriot!

Anybody else here love James Herriot?
He was a vet, and wrote about his experiences-in the most hilarious way!

He seems to have a natural knack for storytellling...I was never bored when I read him. I read through all five books in a flash. And reread.

I love James Herriot! I have only read "Only One Woof" a children's book. It's great. He's such a magical writer, the story really came alive for me.

I'd like to read his other books.

I have read all his books and love them. Have you seen the BBC adaptations?

Hip hip hooray!

We have:
Only One Woof
something about a kitten or puppy or stray dog? for Christmas I believe...
All Creatures Great and Small
All Things Bright and Beautiful
and a collection with other stuff about England and notes and pictures, etc.

I love reading his stories.

I was a big fan of the TV series and that led me to the books. It's been quite awhile since I've read any of them so maybe it's about time for another go. I remember buying a boxed set for my mom for Christmas one year. Bet she still has them around and would lend 'em to me. I loved all of the characters. And knowing that the stories were based on his own experiences made them that much more enjoyable (and hilarious!)

James Herriot's books are truly fabulous. I have had the complete collection for many years now. The best book that I have is a huge hardcover book - reference book size of 500 pages. It is a collection of his best stories and is beautifully illustrated with glossy photographs of the Yorkshire Dales and surrounding countryside. It is also full of small sketches and odd bits of information on old artefacts from that era. It is a very interesting and visually appealing book.

PS. If you like James Herriot you may also like Gerald Durrell - of "My Family and Other Animals" fame.

THose books are wonderful - warm and witty and hilarious and sad and etc.

I haven't read them for years, but I still have them, and will read them to my kids soon.

Thats a wonderful sentence Rian, it reminds me of something Berlioz wrote. He begins a chapter by describing a performance of a very bad opera, whci is so bad that he rates it "very et cetera"

A friend's mother introduced them to me (or vice versa), she'd read them to her kids, and they loved them. Look for "All Living things", where he recounts his miserable evening in a really thick suit that almost kills him. It is absolutely hilarious.

I think I once saw something based on one of these books. Englishy... I don't remember if it was BBC or not. I didn't like it, at any rate. Hm.

I'd certainly hate for you to look BACKWARD to it, dear. That would make you look even more rediculous.
I don't know if it was the show... and I only saw it once. Maybe it is worth watching. Anyway, where do you find re-runs of a BBC show here in the boonies of North America? I mean besides the 'Are You Being Served's on PBS?
