Lightsabres

An odd question, sparked no doubt by too much free time, has entered my mind. Why does Mace Windu have a purple lightsabre?
I think I read somewhere that he traded with another Jedi-- but purple? Though I must admit it would take a great male Jedi to pull it off with dignity, purple is sort of a girl color, it goes aside from the beaten path that Lucas has established. In the first four movies we've only seen three colors: blue, red, and green. Why the sudden color change? Is it because we're going to meet so many new Jedi?

I don't know what the deal with the lightsabre colors is. I played the Jedi Power Battle video game and a jedi called Adi Gallia (or something like that) had a yellow lightsabre. Go figure.

It seems to me like it's not much a problem. George probably said to himself oneday "Sam Jackson has so much coolness, that I could probably give him a purple lightsaber, and he'd still reek of coolness". And he's right. Anyone else with a purple lightsaber, and it would be a BIG mistake. Smart move.

Maybe the limitation of colour in Eps 4-6 represent the small population of Jedi, after the massacre. Whereas, in Ep 1/2, because there is a strong population of jedi, there is more variance.

I heard that Sam Jackson asked George L if he could have a purple one because every one else had green, blue and red.

Also the colour of the blade depends on the colour of the crystal used to contruct it.

maybe there was a shortage of green and blue crystals when they were making Mace's?:

Or maybe they just used a red and blue crystal then.

purple lightsabers

The only reason Mace Windu has a purple lightsaber is coz it's Sam Jackson's favourite colour and he pleded with Lucus to have it purple.

Actually that's pretty cool. Wish I had a lightsaber [sigh] Love starwars almost as much as Lord of the rings.

Also [slightly embarressed] I have the jedi power battles game [always insisted on being Obi Wan] and it's Plo Koon who has the yellow lightsaber. Adi Gallia's is red which is weird coz Lucus said when talking to Jackson that only the bad guys have red. Obviously the makers of the game didn't bother to actually talk to him about it.

My lightsaber would have to be sea green/blue with a silver handle. Has anyone else thought about this or am I just v sad and deluded? Wouldn't mind owning Glamdring or similar either. There's a shop on the web where you can buy it I think but obviously not obsessed or rich enough to actually buy one.

I wish I had one as well, I could take it to work and whenever anyone annoyed me I could slice of there arm!

Mine would have to be blue.

lightsabers

well as i said, the makers of the game obviously didnt consult lucus at all.

mace windu has a blue lightsaber in power battles so it is not exactly 100% accurate.

quite a cool game though, ahem.

p.s apologise for unimagnative title but couldn't think of anything better.

p.p.s has anyone seen the patriot? watching it now. love the line between mel gibson and woman from 101 dalmations
wf101d: you have done nothing for which you should be ashamed
mg: i have done nothing. for that i am ashamed.

that is great. not really starwarsy though.

I think the color depends on the stone used for the power core of the sabre. I read this in many of the expanded universe books.

Here's a link I found on Lightsaber Theory.

Up to now, I'm still at odds as to how that beam of light can just "stop" at the end of a fixed length and not go on and on or dissipate like normal light does. Any good Deus Ex Machina there? The Star Trek Universe had Heisenberg compensators and inertial dampers, for instance.

Yes, as I recall it is about the color of the crystal or whatever inside the sabre. I also recall something about the Jedi finding the crystal or something when they make their lightsabre, but I don't really know, I read this about 3 years ago, and I know there are a lot more knowledgable SW people here.

I want a red light sabre. Can only Sith have them? Doesn't matter, though, 'cause I am one

maybe the nature crystal had some kind of gravity affect. I didn't go to the link yet but I do recall maybe from the RPG( i'll check both later) that the sabers reenergized themselves in some kind feed back loop.

maybe its a midicholorian thing

Thanks A-E.

A focused grav (or E-M) field with a mechanism/fictional instrument could sort of explain it. Info has been quite sparse.

On the midicholorian theory, that would probably reinforce it as a "Jedi/Sith only" weapon.

i meant that the crystal may have a midicholorian count, not that wielders.

Yeah, that's what I thought; but I also thought that since Jedi have trained in controlling them and the force, they'd be skilled in focusing the lightsaber's energy too. Kinda like a trained trumpeteer playing a trumpet.
