Greek Life

Hey! I'm back! It's clearly been a while since I've visited here, but I still think fondly of the moot sometimes. Esspecially if I ever get to the Silmarillion again, I'm finishing that journal I started.

I've missed things, I'm sure. I'm going to look around after I make this post. You all missed the part where I accepted a bid to Alpha Phi Delta fraternity, too. Now I'm a pledge, which isn't bad.

It was kind of ridiculously spontaneous. But I established that all of these guys rock far more than I expected frat brothers could rock. I thought, why not? I'm hanging out with these people from now on anyway. The only downside now is facing that frat boy stereotype, you know?

So, what do mooters think about fraternities and sororities? Be honest! Who do you know that's in one? Yourself? Any experiences with some?

Liked Animal House or didn't you?

My question is: "Greek life, or Greek love?"

I wasn't in a sorority, but my mom was, and loved it!

Just be careful of the drinking ... moderation now will save you a heap of trouble later! [/mom mode]

Stereotypes are well-deserved, in most cases .

I've always wondered: exactly what do Fraternities or Sororitites do? They seem to be a useless club...no wrong in that, since the club part might be the biggest reason for joining...

I think they're mostly for fun and a way to meet people, but most of them (at least in my time) tacked on some charity for good measure Some of them are big-time family things - if your mom was a delta-phi, then YOU better be one!

Heh, too bad all the frats at my school are just excuses for a bunch of geeks to sit around and drool over comic book cleavage. Much like the rest of my school except there they do it in the company of friends. And I can get drunk enough by myself thank you.

We don't have sororities (why the some many r's?) or fraternities over here, so pretty much all I know about them is what I saw on TV, which understandably, didn't impress me much. We do have some student clubs here, which are usually tied to the different courses and are pretty easy to join.

I didn't join any because truth be told, they didn't look very interesting to me. Sure, they'd organise a few trips or a lot of parties, but partying for the sake of quaffing as much beer as you can and getting drunk really didn't appeal to me. And then there is the silly business of student baptisms where freshmen have to do all kinds of weird, more often then not truly disgusting stuff. It just wasn't my kind of silly.

Other than that, my time as college student was about the best time of my life. Enjoy it while it lasts, that's my advice.

I know exactly what you mean. Jokes with Hector about me being a slobbering drunkard aside, that sort of attitude to alcohol really doesn't appeal to me; it strikes me as very unhealthy, and frankly creeps me out a
bit.

I'm with the chocoholic here. We don't have them. To be honest, I don't really know what they are. Are they different to your regular society? Or is it just different labelling for societies? The Uni I went to has hundreds of societies, the one I was most involved with was the charity fundraising one, RAG. Brilliant fun. I was a committee member for three years, and it was great.

A lot of people do frats for the parties and alcohol - which there is plenty of in most fraternities. but there is also meeting people, getting good close friends, etc.
fraternities have to do some community service - some do it more than others.

Some fraternities do exist just to have crazy parties. Others are more centered on giving back to the community, making good bonds with people.

some people in frats are real jerks. others are nice. depends on the person and the frat.

*shrug*
I went to 2 frat parties in the first couple weeks of school and wasn't too thrilled with them.

Haven't decided yet if I want to rush in the Spring. (Freshmen can't rush first semester here).

Any hazing Bombadillo?

I think the clubs are better because of the common interest factor, but frat/sor are very important to some people.

Ah yes, Greek Life

Memories of living in a cave in Crete, picking olives, plunging into the blue Mediterranean, sailing on a fishing boat across the Aegean, retsina, feta cheese, calimari....

Ooops, wrong Greeks.
