Trotter the Hobbit Ranger.

Trotter the Hobbit Ranger.

If Tolkien had stayed with that idea do you think that LOTR would have just been a extended Hobbit. Or, do you think that it could have still had the "adultness" of LOTR as it is?

Trotter was originally going to be a hobbit who had been caught by Sauron, who did something to his feet so he had to wear wooden clogs. He was going to take the place of Strider and be their guide I believe. I can see why Tolkien changed it....

Trotter sounds like an interesting character, but Strider is definately better. Where did you find out about this Trotter?

Trotter was a hobbit (he wore wooden clogs, in case you're interested), and all the information about him is in the HoME volume Return of the Shadow. Trotter would've taken a lot of the solemn and serious side of LotR away, I think. However, he's a great guy to write fanfiction about!

"History of Middle-Earth" is really an eye-opener. To see how Professor T. struggled to tell this tale is enlightening. LoTR would have been VERY different if Trotter the Hobbit remained in the tale, instead of Strider the Man.

I think if Trotter the Hobbit was there guide, the story would definitely have been more of a children's story. I'm glad he got changed to Strider. Very glad.

Would Arwen have gone for a clog-wearing Hobbit?

Hear, hear!

I agree with Khadrane: If Tolkien would had kept Trotter, LOTR would have been much more like 'the hobbit' and more a children's story.
