Where is Middle Earth?

Can anyone show me a map of the world with Middle Earth? And if you say "the middle of the Earth" I'll punch you in the face!

Re: Where is Middle Earth?

Middle-earth cannot be shown on a modern map. For one thing it's totally fictitious... For another, it supposedly existed something like 6000 years ago, before the Biblical flood. After the flood, the geography changed.

Re: Where is Middle Earth?

Well, some of the areas on the Middle Earth maps look suspiciously like areas of Earth today.

Re: Where is Middle Earth?

I'm afraid Eruve is not entirely correct. Tolkien regretted using a completely fictional map for THE LORD OF THE RINGS. He stated on numerous occasions that Middle-earth is our world. There was not supposed to be an implication of changed geography as people must infer to rationalize the map away.

The Middle-earth map shows what Tolkien identified with "the northwest of the Old World, east of the sea". The Old World is Europe, Asia, and Africa. Any correlations with real geography are probably just coincidental, although Tolkien did once or twice take a stab at applying some identifications.

As of December 2001, Middle Earth will be located in New Zealand.

Re: Where is Middle Earth?

Perhaps I misinterpreted the original question. What I meant by my answer was you can't point to, say, the south of France and say this was where Gondor was, etc. That's the sense I took the original question in.

Now this is really funny, Eruve - as soon as I read what you said, suddenly two words popped straight into my head - "Minas Eiffel"

Where is Middle-Earth

My first posting!
Though Tolkien made that comment about "6000 years ago", I think that was largely to give enough time for the Elves, Hobbits, Dwarves etc. to dwindle away (sob!).
Middle-Earth actually resembles Europe at the time of the Dark Ages, with The vanished Northern Kingdom of Arnor standing in for the Western Roman Empire, while Gondor is about the same location as Byzantium (and filling largely the same role).
