help

I don't have my book handy, and no immediate resources to check. One of my dad's friend's son (irrevalent) has an english paper. He's answered all the questions except a 5, I narrowed it down to two.

These are all questions concerning the 4th chapter in the hobbit:

"What forebodings did Gandalf have when leaving Rivendell?"

"What mistakes did the dwarves make after leaving Rivendell?"
(This question is refering to the time between Rivendell and the run-in with the goblins on their front porch)

The days have gone down in the West behind the hills into shadow.

Who shall gather the smoke of the dead wood burning, or behold the flowing years from the Sea returning?

I don't understand why people that can't help post anything at all. If you can't help, then why post?

To the second question:
The Dwarves did not check rightly the cave in which they were searching for schelter.

The first question I don't know out of hand.

Respectfully

Hmm, I would say he had forebodings of trouble that awaited them. Gandalf knew “how evil and danger had grown and thriven in the Wild” and that “even the good plans of wise Wizards like Gandalf and of good friends like Elrond go astray sometimes when you are off on dangerous adventures over the Edge of the Wild; and Gandalf was a wise enough Wizard to know it.
“He knew that something unexpected might happen, and he hardly dared to hope that they would pass without fearful adventure over those great tall mountains with lonely peaks and valleys where no king ruled.”

I’m not sure what they are looking for here, unless it is, as Findegil mentioned, the implication that the dwarves did not thoroughly explore the cave (though Gandalf later used his lighted staff and explored it “end to end”) and the fact that they became unwary as they talked of their plans for their treasure.

Hope that helps a little.

I think they may simply want that "the dwarves sheltered in the back entrance of the goblin tunnels"

No idea 'bout the second one but I do agree with Ithildin55 about question number 1 because the book says that both Gandalf and Elrond were a little weary because no one had really discovered or wiped out all the evil that resided in those mountains. So Gandalf was just worried if he had chosen the right course of action.

For the second question, the dwarves mistake was probably that they did not leave a watchman when they slept in the cave. I dont know about the other question.

Probably to get their post count up without (technically) spamming.

It's so annoying though. They're asking if you can help, not if you can't help.

Right. But you can delete their post, no?
