No, it's not just you. Tolkien was very influenced by Beowolf.

Well my dad owns a copy of Beowolf that was written by J.R.R. Tolkien so I am sure that Thorin was very much influenced by Beowolf. One a monster took both of their homes and killed their family. Two both of them went and found people to take it back. Three they are both fierce and gruff and four there was also a dragon hoard in Beowolf that contained a golden goblet that was important.

Wow. I know nothing about Beowulf. Care to post (or point me to) a summary?

EDIT: just looked it up: so, Beowulf was killed by a dragon, which also perished in the process. He had no sons, so his throne passed to his kin.

What other similarities are there?

Beowulf (for anyone who doesn't know) was a viking king who killed a monster called Grendel which was attacking the hall of another lord every evening (he cut off the monster's arm and it bled to death). He then had to kill Grendel's mother who tried to get revenge, and then he slew a dragon which finally killed him. Not a lot of similarities with Thorin, but the style of storytelling is quite close.

the similarities are in their style. Thorin talks a whole lot about himself and his forefathers he brags all the time. Beowulfe has the same style agood deal of talk and bragging same personality.

The hobbit was part childrens take, part epic, and very norse. Tolkien uses a lot of the kind of literary devices and humor that is found in norse works.
