The Official Design Discussion Thread

One of the ugliest colourschemes ever chosen for a car is the so-called gold, which imo looks more like Baby diarrhoea!!

Sorry. My intention was to discuss different aspects of design, but if the Mods think it a trivial thread they may close it right away.

Grey_Wolf, I feel your pain on gold cars. I also commend you, as someone who speaks English as a second language, for spelling diarrhea (diarrhoea is also correct) correctly.

If the thread isn't just about car design, there's the public library in my home-town to illustrate bad design.

Firstly, it's two floors. The old library was one floor which made it easier for the librarians to keep track of what's going on. Secondly, as our old mayor described it, "It looks like a Russian shoe factory." Thirdly, someone decided to go for a natural theme for painting the outside which is fine, but it didn't work so well in practice. They seemed to feel that vomit yellowish-orange was a "natural" colour. I think they were trying to go for a muted dusty brown (which would be nice) and then had an accident with the baby food delivery truck. Inside and out, the building is ugly. But at least it's full of great books and nice librarians, so meh. Plus there was a small fire in the old library which destroyed some books, so I'm glad they don't have to rent there any more.

For awesome design there's the main Vancouver public library. I was only there once, years ago (it's really far away!), but I still remember it's amazing design. It's horseshoe shaped and wood panelled, with an open area in the centre. The building is about eight or ten floors tall, and the circular layout gives it a really stunning effect!

Wood panelling and an open atrium is part of the beauty of the UBC Forestry building as well. Another important feature is the laminated wood beams, which are gorgeous, and also illustrate forest technology.

The Chan Centre for the performing arts is another wonderful building. Not only are the outside and the inside beautiful and aesthetic, the acoustics are phenomenal! It was designed specifically for performing arts (music only, not theatre), and has different panels that can be lowered to change the acoustics at need.

UBC has a lot of really awesome buildings. Another amazing one is the Native Longhouse. (Then there's the Arts building Buchanan, but never mind that.)

Edited because I can't type apparently.

Thanks, Nurv.

In Hittarp, my mother's community, they have begun exchanging the old fishing cottages and generally better looking 1930's houses with white, boxy "continental"-looking houses (there's general uproar over this in the entire village).

on that note... would it be sacrilege to consider putting that nifty new tee shirt logo up as the new banner for the 'moot?

Hey, I like the Moot's colors! It would be, if not sacrilege, mean to change them.

I just wanted to mention the coolest design I've ever seen: the Rotterdam Cube Houses!
