Pre-Hobbit Smaug

Does smaug ever have mention outside of the Hobbit? How old was he? Was he only such a threat because he was the last of his kind, and had spent so many years sleeping and growing in power? Did he take part in any of the previous wars? Was he aligned with morgoth? Sauron? Or was he just self serving and generally unimportant in history outside the story of Thorins people?

There isn't a lot of information on Smaug outside The Hobbit, to my knowledge. At best we can speculate. In that light, I'd like to link to this thread that may have some more info.

The only answer I can give you here is that Smaug would have served Morgoth, if he wasn't forced to dwell outisde Arda, in the Void . Sauron howerever may have been capable of making league with him using cunning, but Smaug would have been he's own master serving only himself.

I think Smaug came around long after Morgoth was cast out.

Yes that is quite obvious, but he is a Dragon still. Morgoth was the maker of the Dragons(not Smaug, just the start of the race.), so they would have been abliged to serve him, just like the Orcs. So for example just say that in the story Morgoth would of come back during the time Smaug was alive, I believe that Smaug of served him. do you get my drift?

The Hobbit does not describe Dragons as in much depth as the Book the Children of Hurin. But as a dragon, Smaug wasn't just a shiny creature. He would have been very foul smelling.
