The Dark Knight Rises

There's not a recent thread for this, so I thought it was about time

Needless to say, this could be the big movie of the year, perhaps beating out The Hobbit Part 1. Perhaps. I've been looking forward to this movie ever since rumors started after the second film. Early reviews are going full gaga for it (perhaps prematurely). Anyone else as excited as I am?

I've always liked Anne Hathaway. I look forward to seeing her as Catwoman. I haven't seen the two previous movies in this series in full (bits & pieces here and there), and my oldest and I plan to watch them before, then go see this new one. Looks like it'll be the last of this series as well.

Wow - after what happened last night in Aurora, CO - I'm not sure I want to see it anymore. It would feel weird.

Val, I feel the same way. I'm waiting. The shooting was incredibly evil.

Not sure I would be able to watch this film now, knowing what happened to those people.

I find superhero movies - indeed superheroes generally - to be infantile and reactionary on the whole.

EDIT - That needs a bit of explanation

The superhero is invariably cast as the lone individual "in the right", up against "the corrupt system". This feeds off and encourages our childish sense of injustice. If only we had enough might, we'd set things right!

At least LOTR, although simplistic in other ways, sets its stall strongly beyond such solipsism. "Many who die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too quick to deal out death in punishment!"

Yeah but this is a Christopher Nolan Batman film, which earns some slack-cutting. And rather than focus on someone with other-worldly powers it's about a normal guy. Who just happens to be a billionaire. And trained by a bunch of secret ninja monks. Virtually a documentary.

Virtually a documentary...

It was a pretty good film... there were some things I felt weren't explained very well, though.

What cracked me up the most was not in the film itself. It was a preview.

Man of steel preview

Do you recognize that music? It just happens to be the same music that is playing as the Fellowship spills out of Moria, racked with grief because of what happened to Gandalf.

I like Anne Hathaway very much, her role is very cool. As to the film, just cannot wait.

*sigh*

The Aurora shooting was pretty horrifying and did make me wait a long time before seeing it. Even then I was vigilant to not enjoy the movie too much. But there ended up being little need for my vigilance since the film was a serial non-starter. There were two or three moments of greatness, but otherwise a letdown. And, the film wasn't horribly made or anything. But there was a lot going with little resolution, and yet spun out overlong. I think there was a lot of unnecessary stuff, like Bruce Wayn's Howard Hughes Syndrome, which took up a lot of space and didn't propel the plot in any way.

What I did like was when Batman first shows up again after the 8 years. And I really liked that Truth had its day, as Alfred said it should. Sure, the lie that ended the second movie was nobly sacraficial and satisfying in a twisted, selfish way. But I'm glad that secrets weren't kept, and that people knew the real story.

Robin. Gah. Hate.

Catwoman. Love.

Tell me more about Catwoman in this movie - I don't know the movie or the earlier movies or even the cartoons, but I like Anne Hathaway the actress very much.

Who is Catwoman and how does Anne Hathaway play her? Are there YouTube clips that show her in the movie? I've seen interviews, but I'm not so interested in more of those.
