"The Awakening" by Kate Chopin

I had to read this book for school and I didn't really like it. Has anyone else read it? What are your opinions on it? My reasons for not liking it: the writing style seemed quite dry and bland, and the story was very predictable. It seems like I'm one of the few people who didn't like it and I'm wondering why. Well, I know that it was a novel on independance of women, etc, but I just didn't enjoy it. Any thoughts?

I've read it, of my own accord (gasp)... I agree that the writing was dull, but I managed to enjoy it because I liked the characters and the symbolism (even though the latter was ridiculously blatant). It's one of those books that you can read exactly once; a second reading would be unspeakably annoying.

Yeah, I found it very *blah* and the symbols were so obvious, and the storyline was very predictable. Oh, well, what can ya do? I'm writing up my report on it now, and I have to "analyse the writer's style..." ick!
