Great idea, azalea! I just started re-reading LOTR - it's been a few years because I've been reading the HOME books - and for some reason, I'm appreciating ol' Tom more this time around, so I'll take Book I, ch. 7&8: In the House of Tom Bom and Fog on the Barrow Downs, if they're still open.

Could I just suggest that you PM the person a week in advance to remind them, if you wouldn't mind, in case they can be somewhat forgetful, like me

Thanks Azalea. I will sign up for 9. Book II, ch. 1: Many Meetings as well, because I think it will come up due in the summer. (I'll be sure to let you know if I can't actually do it, but it looks good.)
I'll give that one up if we run out of chapters and someone still needs one.

Treebeard

I'd be glad to take Book III ch. 4: "Treebeard" and/or Book III ch. 8&9 "The Road to Isengard" and "Flotsam and Jetsam". I hope we can do two, but if not I'd prefer 8 and 9.
In other words, Eärniel or anyone, you could still take "Treebeard" if you want it more than me.

This should be good, Azalea.

I love Flotsam and Jetsam! I should have booked that one. Nah, Many Meetings is super too. And of course, my beloved Scouring.

So much Tolkien, so little time.

Haha! Too slow! Yeah, I missed "The Voice of Sauruman" too, but Rad and Lin will most likely do a better job anyway. These things are being snatched up.

I'd offer to work together with you on "F & J", but I'm already expecting Anglorfin for this.

Rian -- yes, PMs will be sent -- good idea.

Bombadillo -- if Anglorfin does end up working with you on one, please let me know so I can add him.

I'm sure we will all be very generous about letting others have our second sections if they really want one, and also I know we'll all be willing to step in and intro any that aren't taken by the due date, so I'm not at all worried about it. Remember, the discussion is the most important part anyway, and this is all for fun, and hey, we're the mooters. We're always very good about sharing, etc. Just go ahead for two chapters if you want, and we can adjust things later if need be. The key here is flexibility.

This is so exciting!

I'm fine with you sharing that with us, I don't know about Rad though. We could all discuss it through chat, which is how Rad and I plan to do it. (PM might be inconvenient). Rad and I both doubt our ability to write it well, anyway.

Azalea- Yes, I plan to do both sections, if that's ok. 3 months should be ample time for me, I hope. And I agree, it is most exciting!

I've been thinking of the same idea; it will be nice to discuss the books more!

I'd like to do 2. Book I, ch. 1: A Long Expected Party and 34. Book VI, ch. 1: The Tower of Cirith Ungol. I'd be willing to do any other chapter with hobbits, especially Sam and Frodo's journey, if nobody else wants to, or if somebody drops out.

Rian took the chapter I would have wanted, (Tom Bombadil) so....I'll pass. Have fun.

Nah, thank you though. It's just my favorite chapter but I'd rather not write about it anyway. Plus I'd most likely go way overboard and just republish the whole chapter with ridiculous commentary.

sounds exciting... i've read the sil project thread a few times, but was a bit late to jump in

i'll let others choose chapters first, as i am somewhat new at this... if there are any left, i'll grab one or two... if not, feel free to put me at the top of the "backup" list for those who are short on time

[I would be interested in doing section 16: Passing of Boromir and the Riders of Rohan

I'll also be interested in undertaking Appendices E&F, unless that's too greedy.

What a great idea!

No other chapter tickles your fancy, such as this excellent chapter?
24. Book IV, ch. 3&4: The Black Gate is Closed and Of Herbs and Stewed Rabbit

I'm surprised no one signed up for it yet, actually. Even if you don't want it, I hope you still participate in the discussion.

I looked at the "Silmarillion Project", and it seems that the analysis of a chapter is knitting together sequential quotes from the chapter with relevant comments, so that it summarizes the events and their meaning. Is that what we do?

Cheers, Nurv

Tom Bombadil

Nah...Tom's my man! I like the early chapters, Bree and before. This will work out good, Rian can do all the hard work, and I can add my two cents worth afterwards, if I am so moved! Perfect!

No, it's alright, I already grabbed two chapters. Mustn't be too greedy or I might having to hand them over for reassigning before I am even aware of it. But you can bet I will be joining the discussion on the Treebeard chapter.

Also, you can trade sections, or give one of yours to someone that doesn't have one and wants to do one (I anticipate some newbies will come in during the course of the project), but you just need to LET ME KNOW so that we have an accurate listing.
Well then, speaking in the hypothesis that the chapters get filled out pretty fast (as they seem to be doing now) and somebody finds himself without a chapter at all -I'll say it now already- I am prepared to give one of my claimed prizes up. (But not both, you'd understand)

I think we should make the intros more simple and short. The intros in the Sil project are very long and - imo - sometimes likely to scare people away.

Fair enough Artanis. I have no idea how to go about this really, so my mind is a blank slate. (I very large blank slate, mind you. )
How do you think we should write our analyses?

on second thought... i'd like to try 13. Book II, ch. 5&6: The Bridge of Khazad-dum and Lothlorien if it's still up for grabs

second choice: 11. Book II, ch. 3: The Ring Goes South

preferably not both as they are so close together

You know, I should be fine by just using Azalea's guidelines. I won't worry, I just really want to do a good job!
I don't mind reading a long discussion, especially about Tolkien.
