I only have a few beginning comments, but I would like to put them in the Tolkien perspective of things, just to match what this board is all about

'To Iraq!' the Ents cried in many voices.
'To Iraq!'
To Iraq! Though Iraq be ringed and barred with doors of stone;
Though Iraq be strong and hard, as cold as stone and bare as bone,
We go, we go, we go to war, to hew the stone and break the door;
For bole and bough are burning now, the furnace roars - we go to war!
To land of gloom with tramp of doom, with roll of drum, we come, we come;
To Iraq with doom we come!
With doom we come, with doom we come!

It is about damn time we overthrow this tyrant and free the people of Iraq from this despot!

In this place will I abide, and my heirs, unto the ending of the world.'

'Then Tuor arrayed himself in the hauberk, and set the helm upon his head, and he girt himself with the sword; black were sheath and belt with clasps of silver. Thus armed he went forth from Turgon's hall, and stood upon the high terraces of Taras in the red light of the sun. None were there to see him, as he gazed westward, gleaming in silver and gold, and he knew not that in that hour he appeared as one of the Mighty of the West, and fit to be father of the kings of the Kings of Men beyond the Sea, as it was indeed his doom to be; but in the taking of those arms a change came upon Tuor son of Huor, and his heart grew great within him. And as he stepped down from the doors the swans did him reverence, and plucking each a great feather from their wings they proffered them to him, laying their long necks upon the stone before his feet; and he took the seven feathers and set them in the crest of his helm, and straightway the swans arose and flew north in the sunset, and Tuor saw them no more.' -Of Tuor and his Coming to Gondolin

*sigh* Oh well, it's come to this.....such is the way of the world.

It seems that the Royal Marines will be spearheading the attack, I guess that's what they signed up for...[no appropriate smiley].

I don't welcome the war but I still hope the Brits come home safe and sound...Good Luck lads

Nope, I don't think they will leave, I suspect they will fight to their death to be brutally honest...

ABCNews has been having a new Special - it'll be on until 11:00.

I hope no one dies either. I wish Hussein would just go into excile. I wish he would have turned over his WMD. I wish we wouldn't have been going to war. But I'm a realist - this was the only way to prevent Hussein from continuing his weapons programs and in the future threatening the world.

Now I hope the war goes smoothly - most of the Iraqi army gives up like the last time, that the oil wells don't get blown up, that there aren't any successful terrorist attacks, that Iraq doesn't successfully bomb Israel or any of it's neighbors and that we rebuild Iraq into a free democracy.

I don't think that's what Coney meant GW. I think we want all the troops British and American to come home safe and sound.

As for Sadam and his sons leaving Iraq: that will not happen. Sadam has been defiant in every way. He will not comply now, not even if it means war. I pity that country. They are in for a terrible beating.

The raising of the terrorist alert has no meaning in New Jersey. We, along with New York, have been on that alert since 9/11.

The way I look at the alert - whether it's green or red - there is always the chance of a terrorist attack.

My point was that rather than hoping that the people of your own nationality don't die, IMO at least, it would be far better to hope that ALL casualties are minimized.

I knew that's what you were getting at. I was going to stay out of it. The only people I want dead is Hussein, his sons and any hard liners.

Exactly......Just because I am anti-war does not mean that I want the death of anyone....I'm mad, but I'm not that mad

The war is going to happen, hopefully with a minimum of casualties on all sides.....surely that is the hope for all, both pro-action and anti-action???

Gods, I hope so

And what about the Aussie SAS troops just joking i too hope that everyone comes back alive but as is the way with war i know that this wont be the case
as most people would agree i dont like the prospect of war but im not going to go out and have a go at the soldiers for doing there job like what shamefully happened with vietnam...
as for Bush's speech i am just waiting to what happens to those iraqi soldiers that do refuse orders...
i think war is imminent and Saddam will not back down...
i know that warfare has changed in the last 100 years but i just keep thinking WW1 when 'specialists' on the news say it will be over in a few strikes

No, I did not. Someone who is against war would not be very likely to feel that way. But that is what it sounds like, when you say specifically that you hope that the British come home safely, especially when the movement is being headed by the Americans.

Prime Minister Howard hasn't said whether they were going to participate in military action yet. He was supposed to go to parliment the last thing I heard. I hope none of the allied troops get killed (impossible obviously) - but it is their job to fight wars. Oh - ABCNews just said that PM Howard just announced Australia will fight along side Americans.

Supposedly during the past weeks there already have been Iraqi soldiers crossing the line and surrendering. They were forced to turn back because they had no place to put them yet. They have to wait until fighting actually starts in order to surrender.

Well that's one thing I'm worried about. City warfare isn't easy - but I think we had TONS of time to plan things out. We also have a huge amount of fire power that Hussein doesn't have.
