I didn't understand a word Wayfarer said, so I'll answer though I suspect he did. There was but one part of Smaug's flesh that was unprotected. The rest was covered in jewells and scales, etc. Think of it like the Death Star in Star Wars, one weak spot could be its Achilles Heel. As for Smaug's color, I believe he was golden, but the fire from him probably caused it to shine red at times.

Smaug was a 'red-gold dragon'.
_____
Wayfarer was speaking l33t, the Black Speech of the gaming world. Here's what I think is what he said in the Common Tongue:

Quote:
You are so right dude!

Black arrows suck! Dragons rock! I am uber 133t! I will pk [player-kill, the act of killing another person's player character in an online game] you, because you are gay!
Wayfarer was actually making fun of The_Real_Legolas, I believe he was inferring the good poster to be akin to the 'mindless PKers' of online gaming. Er, ... shame on you Shannon, shame on you, we don't support that sort of thing. ... Quick Legolas, I'll hold him while you lay the muffins down! *advances towards Wayfarer menacingly*

Help! Help! Help!
(Dratted Kid... What did you go and translate it for?)

I believe smaug was reddish-gold all about, with a crust of trinkets protecting his soft underbelly. At least that's what he looks like on the dust-jacket of my copy of The Hobbit.

In any case... smaug was slain by a combination of chance, pride, and cunning. If Bilbo hadn't been along, or if he hadn't seen the patch, or if smaugh had went back to sleep after smashing the mountainside, or if the thrush hadn't been sent to Bard, or if bard hadn't been an archer, or if he hadn't had the black arrow...

Smaug wouldn't have been slain. In fact, the combination of factors that led to his death are a prelude to the very similar factors that led to to downfall of Sauron.

Of course... I am sympathetic, considering I've lost no less than five dragon characters to even more inane circumstances.

Smaug was a sloppy dragon, much too self-assured. He had it coming!

"My armour is like tenfold shields, my teeth are swords,
my claws spears, the shock of my tail a thunderbolt, my wings a hurricane, and my breath death!" "I have always understood," said Bilbo in a frightened squeak, "that dragons were softer underneath, especially in the region of the--er--chest; but doubtless one so fortified has thought of that." The dragon
stopped short in his boasting. "Your information is antiquated," he snapped. "I am armoured above and below with iron scales and hard gems. No blade can pierce me." "I might have guessed it," said Bilbo. "Truly there can; nowhere be found the equal of Lord Smaug the Impenetrable. What magnificence to possess a
waistcoat of fine diamonds!" "Yes, it is rare and wonderful, indeed," said Smaug absurdly pleased. He did not know that the hobbit had already caught a glimpse of his peculiar under-covering on his previous visit, and was itching for a closer view for reasons of his own. The dragon rolled over. "Look!" he said.
"What do you say to that?" "Dazzlingly marvellous! Perfect! Flawless! Staggering!" exclaimed Bilbo aloud, but what he thought inside was: "Old fool! Why there is a large patch in the hollow of his left breast as bare as a snail out of its shell!"

Little Bilbo Baggins
Crept into Smaug's cave,
Wearing Sauron's One Ring;
Which made him very brave,
Oh...

Smaug, the giant lizard
Was not a dinosaur!
And Bilbo stole his golden cup
Despite his fiercest roar . . .
