Eruviel, I have to add that IronParrot is right, and distributors tend to look with disdain on self-published books. Your best bet is to get accepted for publication by a regular publishing house. But you practically have to be John Grisham or Stephen King for that.
With POD like iUniverse, if you sell enough copies you may get picked up by a regular publisher, which is why I'm promoting my book. It should have been written by T.H. White (The Once and Future King), but I did my best. I think it's pretty good -- besides, somebody had to write the story of Sigurd! |

I note one chapter is called 'Escape to Mirkwood'. Is it Tolkien based or what?
I'm ordering it too, shortly.

That shipping fee is exorbitant- if you get it from barnesandnoble they don't charge shipping if you get 2 items. I'm thrilled that anyone is thinking of ordering it! |

I'm really enjoying this book! Have just got to the part where Albric has uttered the curse! Those stupid Nymphs! I'll keep trying to read it as quickly (not very!) as I can. I like the way I can read one chapter and stop. Very good so far EL!

Well, now I'm at the part where the grandson has just reforged the sword Mimir couldn't. (I have to say, I liked the "brother sister" bit! ) So...help me out here Entlover! Did you take the familiar Norse Gods and create a new story, or is this a basic tale wonderfully retold by you? Middle Earth and Mirkwood are mentioned (so far ) ...just for fun? I'm not familiar with fantasy writing so clue me in !

Hi Lizra,
I'm very happy that you're enjoying it. To answer your question: I read a bunch of ancient sources, including The Volsunga Saga(Norse), the Nibelungenlied (German), William Morris' books (English), Wagner's operas (German) and some I forget, and combined them all to make The Ring of the Dark Elves. If you go to see the opera The Ring of the Nibelung by Richard Wagner you will recognize the plot, but I've elaborated and changed it. My only regret is that later I read that Tolkien said calling the dwarves "dark elves" was a bad idea. Too late. But I think they make good dark elves, kind of fantastical little creatures. I'm looking forward to your final opinion. I'm trying to work up my courage to offer it to local bookstores. Oh, Middle Earth and Mirkwood are translations of old Norse names, Tolkien just borrowed them. |

Oh my! Gwaimir...you are indeed "special"!
Entlover, I got a hoot out of the painfully accurate descriptions when the Aesir were rapidly aging. Oh! my aching joints! I like the description of "Gleipnir"..."it was made out of the roots of stones, the breath of a fish, the beards of women, the noise of a cat's footfall, the sinew of bears, and the spittle of a bird." The curse is awful! ""May he who does not have it be consumed by envy, and may he who has it be eaten up by fear. Whoever owns it shall gain his hearts desire, and it will turn bitter as gall in his mouth. Whoever gloats over lordship of the ring shall die enslaved to the ring; and the one gift of the ring to all who own it shall be death!" I also like Odin's description of Frigga, "going in awe of her lucid, often acrid judgement." I do that to my husband sometime! I HATE it when I do! Better to be sweet.... |

Hey! Were's my happy ending! This is worse than the Silmarillion! I want to stop with Brynhild and Sigurd, when they first fall in love. Forget the rest! Aiiiiii!
So, Entlover..... how (where) do I go about this review? Please PM me if there is anything in particular you would like mentioned! Last edited by Lizra : 06-19-2003 at 08:06 PM. |

Yes, I also would like to know where we're supposed to review it.
You read that fast, Liz! Can't wait for my copy to arrive.

Well, It's not exactly a happy ending, but it all depends on your point of view.
Does LotR have a happy ending? Now that's a good question! To post a review on barnesandnoble.com, just go to www.bn.com, (and it magically turns into barnesandnoble.com), under Search you see Bookstore, type in the book's title, then click on the title when it appears, then scroll down to Customer Reviews -- write your own reviews. They walk you through it. If you're feeling extra benevolent, you could also go to amazon.com and do pretty much the same thing. It's very kind of you to write a review! And Gwaimir too if his book ever gets there -- just be sure not to write it as if you know me. They might think you're biased. (well, you don't know me -- but I feel like the moot is one big family). |
