Jonathan guessed right.
We discussed it, and decided it was another form of conversation thread. That's not bad in itself, but we've already determined to keep all that in the infamous "Teacup Cafe". The arrows are simply another way to say 'me' 'you' 'him/her', etc - and are able to be used in other threads - and have been, at times. So - not to make anyone feel bad, but... closing.
