I remember reading a few of these when I was younger (I also remember them being a load of crap, but that is by-the-by).

so you don't have to start from the beginning or whatever? i meant what was the very first dragonlance book ever published, but is it one of those series where they aren't all related to one another? this is terribly confusing

The Chronicles and Legends run in chronological order......(being 1st and 2nd printed respectively).......I gave up after the Legends trilogy so the books thereafter I can't really comment on

Dragons of Autumn Twilight was the first DL book, I believe. Then comes Dragons of Winter Night, and Dragons of Spring Dawning; Dragons of Summer Flame doesn't happen till quite a while afterwards.

Well, the books are directly written using a RPG as the source (Weiss and Hickman actually based the plot on their own AD&D campaign).....this makes the plot very linear and superficial (very, very boring history and geography)....any experienced RPG'er has seen this a thousand times.

The books were origininally comissioned by TSR as a promotional vehicle for their RPG setting, as soon as the books proved more popular than the RPG Weiss and Hickman were sacked (hooray) from the book front, though I believe they were later re-commisioned.

To anyone wishing to read this pile of crud...........by all means read it, then go back to LotR.....it'll make you appreciate Tolkien so much more

I didn't see anything wrong with the history or geography. The purpose of RPG's is to tell a story through a game. Though I definitely agree with you, the books that aren't game fanfic are better.

Shallow...one dimensional...Hmm...I certainly didn't notice.

Especially Raistlin. He didn't seem shallow at all to me. Though as for stereotypical, I think there may have been a bit of that, though not so much with the Elves. -shakes head- You just better not read anything of mine.

I can't stand it the way every character is always unusual, they always are rather different from the norm for their peers, so I make my characters closer to the norm, which I suppose would make them stereotyped.

Descriptive writing...something that lacked a bit in Tolkien.

As for the actual writing style, though, it's been a long time since I've read it.

Understand, I'm not saying that DragonLance is great or anything; I think there isn't a single game-based book I can think of that I like more than a single original book.

But I didn't think it was that bad...

Those are real fantasy

Actually I'd advise Eddings to anyone who is interested in reading their first fantasy book, brilliant introduction to the genre

I've only read one of Terry Brook's Shannara series...Sword of Shannara*yawn*..it was boring as sin

......do they get any better?

I didn't especially like the Sword of Shannara, as it was a rather blatant copy of LOTR's plot. But the others were much, much more original. As for boring, though, I don't know, as obviously we have rather different tastes in regards to fantasy.

Yep, that was the opinion I got from 'Swords' as well....I might try the other one's if they get better (only if they are available on download tho').

Nope, none of them. Not yet. And probably not for a while. I just am rather busy, with school stuff and all.

But I think I'll go reserve TC now at the library. In case I can't figure out, which is first?

Goodness me, I can't read books on the computer well at all! I downloaded UT, hoping to save the money, and I just could not get into it! I'm just gonna buy the book!
