Gandalf Suite101 article for September 30, 2001

I've lost track of where and when my last announcements were posted, but I've been putting up essays on a nearly weekly basis. The latest is called "Riding in carts with Hobbits".

Get out your Celtic history books.

The last essay of yours that was posted here was the Good, the Bad and the Outlawed, which received no responses for mysterious reasons.

I'm fresh out of Celtic history books, but I followed it well enough. You really are a historian at heart, you know that?

I was waiting with anticipation through the history lesson, wondering what you would make of it and Hobbits. It's very interesting what you make of it! Too little I think of Tolkien's writings from that perspective: as the 'inventor' of Middle-earth, with cultures and languages influenced by our own Truth.

One thing has always bothered me about Tolkien's statement in Appendix F in relation to Bucklandish names. If Kalimac is the only personal Bucklandish name that was altered (to Meriadoc), then why do we see names very similar to the style seen in Meriadoc (as opposed to Kalimac) in the Marchbuck family tree? All of those names appear to be altered from their 'original' form.

Sometimes I get lots of discussion, sometimes no followup whatsoever. But people keep reading them, so I keep trying to announce them.

The last three essays were actually devoted to previously unpublished material about Middle-earth which has come out in the journal Vinyar Tengwar. Although I've had few comments about them, a LOT of people read what I had to say.

I only wish I could have reproduced the texts in full. I think that would have been more interesting.

Ooh! Vinyar Tengwar! I'll have to read those.

You haven't -- by any chance -- written anything about Drûgs yet, have you?

No, no Drugs that I can think of. Of course, there are now about 110 articles in the archive, so I can't remember them all.

Come on man, out of 110 articles you couldn't say anything about the only tribe of Edain known to wear grass skirts? That's good material, right?

That is a GREAT LINE! May I use it somewhere? Of course I may! Thank you!

And remember what Shakespeare would have said: A wose by any other name would still smell as bad.
