Trying to build a DVD collection

I finally got a DVD player recently, but I don't have any DVD's yet. But with my birthday coming up soon and some extra cash in my pockets, now is the perfect time for me to start building a collection. But I'm having trouble finding the perfect movies to start with. I want awsome movies, not lame movies, obviously. I also want DVDs with TONS of extras making my money well spent. And I also want a somewhat diverse collection to build off of. So far I've picked out Dr. Strangelove (Special Edition), LOTR: FOTR Extended Edition, and SW AOTC as possible candidates (but LOTR is a definate). Anybody have some suggestions for my collection that meet these criteria? Thanks.

Ill suggest to you a few of the ones I have that are must haves.
The Matrix - I have the original version but the new Special Edition comes out soon.
Gladiator - 2 Discs with tons of extras, a Roman Gladiator Documentary and a few commentaries.
The Simpsons Complete Seasons - I only have the first season yet, but its great.
Braveheart - Not many extras, just a making of I think, but its still a great DVD.
Planet of the Apes - Evolution Box Set - Contains all of the original 5 Planet of the Apes, Digitally Remastered, and an extra sixth Disc with plenty of supplemental material on all the movies, cartoons, toys, etc.
Harry Potter Widescreen - Great movie on the first disc, but on the second disc the extra features are way too hard to navigate.
And last but not least.
LOTR:FOTR Extended - Everyone knows this is the best DVD ever made. 4 Commentaries, 30 Minutes of extended and deleted scenes, 6 hours of documentaries. What else could you want.
Thats all that I can think of now.
Hope this helped you.

Attack of the Clones is a good DVD, extra-wise, but oddly enough, as the DVD goes The Phantom Menace is even better: the audio commentary is just phenomenal, puts the entire film series in a whole new light. Band of Brothers is expensive but incredible. Mr. Show: the First Two Seasons is a great buy. I concur about the Simpsons sets; the commentaries are tremendous. No matter what, do yourself and the already-buying-DVDs-before-they-took-off-with-the-mass-buyers audiences a favor and DON'T buy the "fullscreen" versions, only widescreen. Boy, I remember those hallowed days of yore when all DVDs were widescreen. sigh.

Yea, who ever heard of a fullscreen DVD? Thats ridiculous, I couldnt believe my eyes the first time I saw one. They were all right when they came with the widescreen versions as an extra but when they started selling by themselves I thought it was a disgrace to the DVD.

Of course, I wouldn't even consider fullscreen. The problem is other people who don't get it. Whenever I'm with a friend whose getting a DVD, they insist on getting fullscreen because they think it is better somehow, and nothing I say can change their mind.

The extended edition of FotR, defientely.

I have Spider-man and like it, but it doesn't have a whole lot of extras.

Sorry I'm not much help, but I don't watch much except LotR

Make sure you get some classics. Nosferatu is pretty good, a bit sparse in a way of extras though. And I hear that Metropolis is being re-released with more movie footage. It'll be the most comprehensive release so far.

Oh yeah, forgot about classics. Citizen Kane comes with lots of goodies, including audio commentary by Roger Ebert. The Wizard of Oz has good stuff, too.

May I suggest, Fists of Fury, Bruce Lee? And wait till LotR comes out as a set and then buy it!

Remember to keep tabs on DVD news, if you want to be a serious home theatre / DVD freak. I recommend The Digital Bits. They really know their stuff there, and they're a great news source regarding releases and re-releases.

I have a lot of DVDs of films I absolutely love that have been remastered and re-released in spiffier new editions, like Singin' in the Rain and Unforgiven, most recently. It's often a dilemma for me to decide whether I should buy them again.

I live on campus three hours from my home right now, and my extended family keeps "borrowing" my DVDs without my permission. It's become one of my most infuriating pet peeves.

Are you comparing it to fullscreen? I haven't seen the fullscreen edition, so I can't go into specifics, but I did notice 40% of the picture you didn't if you watched it in fullscreen. Or maybe you're talking about extra features.

My point is, fullscreen completely defeats the purpose of DVDs. DVDs are high-resolution enough that you don't lose image quality when it's presented in a wide aspect ratio. That was pretty much the last excuse the pro-fullscreen nuts had in their favour, and DVD wiped it out. It's pretty senseless to buy DVDs for their superior picture quality if you're not even going to see the whole picture. And it's often the same price.
