What's your opinion of Dwarves?

What do you all think of dwarves in general? Do you like them? Hate them? What are your insights on their behavior and attitudes?

There are certainly Dwarves I admire. Gimli especially. There was bad blood between elves and dwarves, yet Gimli was given the title "Elf Friend"and after meeting the lady Galadriel, he considered himself her champion in all things. These were astonishing acheivements for a dwarf. And I think he deserves our respect for his accomplishments. He was kinder than your average dwarf, and more open-minded. He also had a wider world-view than most dwarves, probably very much influenced by his close companionship to the elf, Legolas.

As for dwarves in general, I don't think much of them. They are greedy. They are for the most part, only concerened with their own little world of mining, and the rest of the world can go hang. They have a miserly attitude towards the things they make, not so much because of the wealth these things represent, but simply to hoard the art itself. They are like artists gone wrong. They are so consumed by their love of metals, gems, and metalworking that it's like they have no room in their hearts for anything else. While they are strong and brave, they don't seem to have any knack for strategy. They remind me very much of the Ferenghi on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine!

Aule made them quick to anger, but also quick to friendship. The ones that slew Thingol over the Nauglamir I don't think much of, but I think they are as intersting as the elves. They weren't portrayed very well, though, considering the dissention in the Hobbit, the animosity of the dwarf-lords to the elves in the Council of Elrond, and the slaying of Thingol.

I think most of the exposure we get of the dwarves (besides Gimli and Bilbo's co-adventurers) detracts from their overall P.R. They were mentioned little, so what we know about them is largely determined by these instances. They aren't as corruptible as humans, yet not as fair of alluring as the elves.

Well, overall, I really like them all equally, just for differing reasons. The dwarves did plenty of good things, they just weren't mentioned as much as the other races.

I was never fond of Dwarves either, until I read The Silmarillion. There are many Dwarves in that book who are brave and valiant and fight Morgoth with all they've got - the Naugrim, the Elves called them. After that, I have a certain respect for them. I just wish they weren't so short and stubby.

I like Dwarves. They're stout-heartedness and independence is really admirable. They work hard, they're brave, they're amusing. So what if they don't get along with Elves all the time? It's not like being an Elf-Friend is that important of a privilege or anything. All the races in Middle Earth are equal, and the Elves are no better than the rest of them. In the Silmarillion they're as greedy as the Dwarves, and proud and vain and foolish to boot. I think Dwarves are definitely as good as Elves and Men (if not as cool as Hobbits and Ents!).

Yeah, I've read the Sil - but I still like Dwarves! Gimli and Bilbo's 13 Dwarven friends make up for the Sil Dwarves in my mind.

you misread my post "fought with" means on the same side

If you read the passage in the SIL on page 236 you will see that i was giving the dwarves great praise

Dwarves

Um afro-elf I wish you would just type out and post the passage because in my version of the Silmarillion p.236 talks about dior wearing the nauglmir and Sons of Feanor attacking him. Which doesn’t really concern dwarves much.

The Dwarves are always presented with a enough flaws so they keep their (for lack of a better word) Humanity. The more I learn about elves, makes them seem at times overdrawn and almost Saracen to the point where they become caricatures and I stop caring about what happens to them. It’s in the same vein as Galadriel, I liked her much better before I read Unfinished Tales. Charecters can sometimes be overshadowed by their own virtues and loses their personality.

Praise them with great praise! Heh heh . . .

Oh, sorry. You said there were only two Dwarves you like, so I assumed the passage was the reason you didn't like the others in general.

What about The Hobbit's Dwarves? Don't tell me you don't like them!

Dwarves were probably the hardiest of the races--really, superior to teh others in my mind--but the books show them as having very poor luck in their history.

If you dont have luck, you dont have much.

Edit: oh yeah, I'm new here.

Dwarves are materialistic and hot-tempered. On the other hand they are honest, trustworthy, hardworking, and loyal, not to mention brave. You could find no more steadfast friend nor faithful ally than a Dwarf. Their virtues far outweigh their vices. I think Dwarves are awesome.
