Gandalf Just found this forum!!!

Hello! I have read LOTR 7 times since I was 15(45 now). Just started on #8. Obviously, I enjoy it! I could not enjoy "The Silmarillion" as much...too bad Tolkien (the father) "had sailed to the West"! Christopher is a poor substitute in literary style. He just took his father's notes and wrote an essay! I think we would have all enjoyed it much more, if he just would have published his father's notes. I really do not think JRR intended to write "The Silmarillion". One other reason I think LOTR is so good is this...J.R.R. Tolkien actually believed it all happened!!!

Hullo!

Welcome to Entmoot!

Christopher has published his father's notes, but it's taken thirteen books to do so (Unfinished Tales and the History of Middle-earth series). He could not have possibly published his father's 'notes' in one book. There is still a lot of unpublished material. And there's so many conflicting ideas we probably wouldn't have gotten a clear grasp of the overall story.

There is clear evidence that Tolkien intended to publish The Silmarillion, and seems to never have given up hope for it.

Gandalf

I guess I meant JRR did not intend to publish it in any way remotely similar to the way it was published.

Welcome to the board. I must say that I very much enjoy the Silmarillion. It has the tone of a history book, and history is my favorite subjuct (I'm an History Major ) and that is why I found it so interesting.
