Legolas is a great character no doubt, one of my favourites yes. But with the massive list of characters throughout all of Tolkien's works its so hard to have just one favourite character

HEY HEY HEY! How can you tel that you're "real Legolas"? There are many Legolases, as me. So, we should hold a contest to find who is Legolas.
My fav is Legolas, of course.

Elves have two names, yeah? Their fate name (given by their mother) and another one given by their father. Does anyone know what Legolas' other name was?

(I've been given the task to find out so that I can win an arguement against one of my friends [a film fan, bleurgh!] that Greenleaf is a translation of Legolas, not his 'second name'.)

Greenleaf isn't his last name, you're right...you can look it up on those Tolkien language sites, lasse (with two dots, to lazy to fix it) means green and such.

Tolkien translated 'Legolas' as 'green leaves' in one of his letters.

That 'two name' thing you're referring to only applies to the Eldar of Valinor. The Wood-elves had some other more complex naming system. The Valinorean Eldar could have more than two names actually (they could also have self-names and given-names*), but the mother- and father- names were the 'true' ones.

One of Legolas's names was probably Thranduilwion, son-of-Thranduil.

*For example Maedros son of Finwe's name was Nelyafinwë Maitimo Russandol. 'Nelyafinwe' was his father-name, 'Maitimo' was his mother name and 'Russandol' was his given-name, something the other Elves called him, a nick-name. Maitimo had the red-brown hair of his mother (which was rare on any Elf). 'Russandol' meant 'copper-top'. I think the name he took as his Sindarin name, Maedros, would be considered a 'self-name', one of the names he gave himself. So his full name might be Nelyafinwe Maitimo Russandol Maedros, I'm not sure.

Well, there's a long explanation.
Firstly, look at my location. I'm from Lithuania, and I've read LotR only in Lithuanian. In this translation, Aragorn calls Legolas "stupid stubborn elf" in Lorien, when Legolas and Gimli dispute whether they should tie their eyes. So, that phrase sounded very funny to me, and I chose it as my sig. I didn't have any intentions on saying Legolas is stupid.

Very funny, Arathorn, but you omitted the most important part of the song--the "E-I-E-I-O."

Legolas is cool, but he's so . . . tame. He doesn't do very much that's interesting (except for the infamous "AI! AI!"). If only he'd cry or laugh or get mad or be emotional in some way, he'd be so much better! Just too perfect for my taste.

Legolas cried when Gandalf died like the rest of the Fellowship, and he at least makes a joke in Flotsam and Jetsam:
Quote:
'And you need not turn up your nose at the rovender, Master Gimli,' said Merry. 'This is not orc-stuff, but man-food, as Treebeard calls it. Will you have wine or beer? There's a barrel inside there -- very passable. And this is first-rate salted pork. Or I can cut you some rashers of bacon and broil them, if you like. I am sorry there is no green stuff: the deliveries have been rather interrupted in the last few days! I cannot offer you anything to follow but butter and honey for your bread. Are you content?'

'Indeed yes,' said Gimli. 'The score is much reduced.'

The three were soon busy with their meal; and the two hobbits, unabashed, set t a second time. 'We must keep our guests company,' they said.

'You are full of courtesy this morning,' laughed Legolas. 'But maybe, if we had not arrived, you would already have been keeping one another company again.'
