no i think banning a book is pointless and a stupid practice that just ends up spurring people to read something that if not banned people would not know existed... Mark 'Chopper' Reid said he was ecstatic after they said they were oing to ban his childrens story Hooky the Cripple because it was going to make him rich... on that book though im sure that people did think it was inapropriate as it basically involved Hooky getting back at the Butcher, Manuello, who teased him and beat him, using the knife he got for his birthday to stab Manuello repeatedly in the face.. not to mention it was a picture book

*bump*

"Catcher in the Rye" has been banned before, I'm sure. I'm reading the book right now, and I think it's terrific! It's one of the funniest, and one of the saddest books I've ever read.

I would like to read as many books that have been banned as I can.

I love the irony...recently my state newspaper had this big "Banned Books Week" article, talking about how the poor authors cope with it etc....they didn't mention a word about The Chronicles of Narnia bieng banned.

In some cases, I'd say that banning went overboard: such as the little kid book that had the word "fart" in it nearly a hundred times. A lot of people here act like "To Kill A Mockingbird" was banned, but it wasn't. It wasn't even nearly banned. The story was that a mother was concerned about adult themes of the book, and that her son had to read them this soon. Not all bans are for irrational reasons. Judy Blume, you may know, is a very controversial author, and has said before that she thinks "sexual interaction" between a parent and child is good for the child. Are parents irrational to want to ban her books from schools?

Never heard that Narnia was banned; where and when?

Not a movie, but Triumph of the Will is pretty much banned in Deutschland.

In certain schools, not everywhere. It was about a year ago or so, maybe more...I read it in some paper or magazine. I'm trying to find some kind of link...

I read about the Judy Blume thing in Tammy Bruce's "The Death of Right and Wrong". Pretty good source since Tammy Bruce knows her from all the feminist movements they were part of.

However, just by reading this, you can see why she causes such a stir...

What do you mean, banned in schools? It couldn't be taught there, it couldn't be read there...?

I remember when "Lady Chatterly's Lover' was banned. Then a few years later when it was allowed, I was one of the first at the library to reserve it.

I think Hector's just making stuff up to cause trouble.

Not that I haven't done the same, but...

Right on Spock. So, is it a good book?

I want to read as many banned/previously banned books as I can. I've already read Harry Potter, now I'm half done The Catcher in the Rye. Lady Chatterly's Lover would be a harder read, I imagine (is it Spock?), but it has been banned, so it's on the list.

The only book that has been banned that I probably wouldn't read is Mein Kampf (sp?) because I'm quite sure it would be so completely full of disgusting rubbish that this overrides the appeal to me of having been banned.

Lolita and other more difficult books are certainly on the list though.

And don't think it means "Intercourse" specifically...what I read was not implying that. It meant, basically, "touching".

Nurv, I would rather read Mein Kampf than Lolita.

And I'll tell you why...

Mein Kampf gives historical insight into one of the most whack jobs mankind has ever had, while "Lolita" is a novel that is more subtle in it's troublemaking, IMO.

Uh huh. So all we have is your word that Judy Blume encourages parents to touch their children in a sexual way? Right then.

I will now prescribe you to take one STTH to be taken thrice daily with food. Here's one to get you started

*smacks hector over the head

Uh huh what? I suppose everything you learn off the internet is wrong then? What are you trying to say, that I'm not telling the truth just because it's not pasted all over the New Zealand posterboards or the internet for you? I read it in Tammy Bruce's book "The Death of Right and Wrong", where she says that Judy Blume said such a thing. I assume Bruce is a good source: she used to head NOW, and was a big part of feminist movements. She still is what you'd call "left-wing", but she acknowledges that the Left has gone wacko.

And I did not say "Encourages", I said that she said that it was OK for a touchy-feely between parent and child. Basically, it implies molestation before a child knows what it is.

Don't look at me, mister. YOU'RE the one who made that allegation. Be prepared to back it up with sources. I-read-it-in-a-book-once-a-while-ago don't count. It's still your word that Judy Blume encourages sexual molestation. If you ain't got anything other than your word, then you'll just have to excuse me while I don't suspend disbelief and buy it.
