Sherlock Holmes Library

Since there is already a SW library thread, what do you have in your Sherlock Holmes library. I have a book called the complete Sherlock Holmes, which has all of the books in it. I just started "The Hound of the Baskervilles." It was one of my favorites, but I havn't finished all of the other books yet.

I have a two volume paperback ed of The Complete Sherlock Holmes stories. I also have some individual hardcovers of different SH stories -- a couple of HoB, A Study in Scarlet, etc. I have read them all (a couple of years ago, although I had read HoB years before that). I love SH stories. I'll have to read them again soon. The nice thing is that they are quick entertaining reads.

I've got two books named 'The adventures of Sherlock Holmes' and 'The return of Sherlock Holmes' that should contain all the stories. It's also nice because they are prints from the original lay-outs as they appeared in the magazines, with some nice oldlooking drawings. I've also got 'The Hound of the Baskervilles' in a little separate booklet.

They're indeed quite entertaining. Is there a story where you guessed who did it before it was unveiled in the end?

I think they're nice to read in order, if you can... because Arthur Conan Doyle keeps adding to the character as you go - and some stories build on others. So first (if not too late) read 'A Study in Scarlet' and then 'The Sign of the Four' - then you can get into the short stories. I think 'Hound of the Baskervilles' was written a bit later, but it's nice in that it's a longer story, like the first two. The first one sort of blows you away... or it did me, when I was young and impressionable.

I don't think there was.

He always seemed to leave out one important detail that only Holmes knew, or could determine anything from it, or didn't reveal until the last minute. But I think there were a few that I knew kind of what was going to happen, even though I couldn't have given a Holmes-style explanation.

I (actually we) have the complete sherlock holmes. I read them all a year or so ago. We also have the New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes--modern mystery writers each gave writing a sherlock mystery a shot. They are decent mysteries, but don't quite capture the style of A. Conan Doyle.

A non-thought provoking wannabe thought provoking thought.

I found a volume of the complete short stories and "A Study in Scarlet" at a garage sale for 50 cents a few years ago. I think it's time to re-read them, since I love Doyle's style and use of language!

I only own one paperback Sherlock Holmes book which has about ten of the stories, because the others I got from the library when I read them (then the library got rid of them without me noticing

) There are around 60 stories altogether, aren't there? I'll have to buy my own complete and decent copy one day.

I think there are about 64 short stories and 4 novels. The only problem with getting them all in one book, is that I think they don't make them anymore. My Complete Sherlock Holmes, published by Doubleday & Co. Inc, is over 40 years old.

I mean if complete volumes are out of print, but you can still get them in second-hand bookshops, I don't mind that
