I watched FotR again over the weekend, and I isolated the exact moment I think it started to go somewhat awry for me. It was right after the excellent scene where the hobbits hid under the tree (sadly there were no elven voices that came to the rescue). It goes from that scene, occuring during the day, to the next, which looks like it's at night, and Merry kind of "confronts" Frodo about the Black Rider. So what happened? Did darkness suddenly fall? What had they talked about between the time they got away from it before and this moment? And what is the source of that light shining behind the Nazgul they see after that? I think the fact that it is suddenly nighttime really muddles things up, and of course then there's the chase scene onto the raft. That really bothered me this time. It wouldn't have been so bad, except that it's so unbelievable and such a typically Hollywood action sequence. Plus, the raft wasn't that far from the bank when Frodo jumps on; the Nazgul could have gotten to him. They needed to be further away from the bank. Anyway, that's my little rant.

Wow. I had a sudden flash of Chrono Trigger for some reason just now.

I recall being intrigued by a review of FOTR which was written by someone who had never read the books. They concluded something like "why couldnt' the rest of the movie have been as good as the first thirty minutes?"

I think that's really the crux of the issue - the films started off so well, and they came so close to getting it perfect to start off with, that the deliberate changes are all the more jolting.

True. From a strictly movie standpoint, FotR was a much better movie than TTT, and maybe it pulls up even with RotK. Maybe. It's just, in the first movie, it's real and you can feel it. In the other two movies, it goes from being real to being entertainment- pandering to what audiences want: big battles... etc.

It was true to the book in all the main scenes apart from Flight to the Ford!

Right; and that's what I liked about it. I hadn't read the books when I saw FotR, but since reading the books I have noticed that the further Jackson went from Tolkien, the more 'entertainment/Hollywood/Armegeddon-crap' it became. I mean, JRRT could have been a moviemaker for all his dramatic talent. To mess with that was just stupid, really- especially when PJ had such a good thing going.

The 2 things I hate most are:

1. Elves at Helms Deep

2. Frodo offering the Ring to the Nazgul

Apart from all other changes those are the two that just seem to be against everything Tollers wrote.

In general it can be summed up as follows --

When the film makers deviated from LOTR. Especially when the changes did not improve on the novel, changes that were so expanded that it forced the cutting of other parts of LOTR from the movie or IMO, the changes did not keep with the spirit of LOTR.

With the budget and resources available I still think the film makers could have done a much better job.

More specifically:

• Portrayal of Merry & Pippin.
• Comments that appear to be references to drugs (ie "weed")
• Black Rider chase before the Ferry
• At Bree, the quickness that the hobbits agree to go into the wilderness with Aragorn without any apparent reasons or proofs given. (If you never read LOTR this does not make much sense and seems like there were scenes cut from the film)
• portrayal of Aragorn's character (his "fear" of his heritage)
• The comment about the campfire before battle at Weathertop.
• The battle at Weathertop.
• The way Arwen was portrayed
• Battle of the Ford
• Elrond
• Council of Elrond (AKA Babel )
• Dwarf tossing joke
• Aragorn & Frodo leaning when bridge was collapsing
• Not including Galadriel's gift giving scene in Theatrical release
• Aragorn giving his "blessing" for Frodo to go to the eastern shore, instead of Fordo leaving without anyone finding out (except for Sam ).

There are more for TT & ROTK but I do not feel like writing them at this moment.

At least he doesn't have epilepsy, or whatever the malady was that had Bakashi's Gandalf waving his arms around in spastic fits.

I mean, I can see even Gandalf, who was in a human body, getting a cough (though I don't think it's pertinent to the story). But the I'm-on-drugs jumping around and ranting was a bit much.

I think the whole Nazgul thing is pretty funny. They're portrayed as pretty incompetent. As Mithrand1r mentioned, the chase scene before the ferry is lame. Why are you scared of the Nazgul when you can already outrun him on horseback Frodo?
And at the dreadful Osgiliath scene, another one I love to hate, the Nazgul is about 2m away from Frodo, looking straight at him, and he does not go after the Ring. Now, I know Nazgul don't have the best vision in the daytime, but they can sense the Ring. So how could the Nazgul mysteriously not sense the Ring when it was right in front of its face?
No need to fear the incompetent Nazmorons Frodo, why not take the scenic route to Mount Doom and enjoy yourself?
