Top 3 Best Cast Characters Thread...

Ok, I've been thinking about this for a while now. Now that we have all 3 movies completed, list your top 3 Best Cast Characters for each film and then overall. This would obviously include your favorites as well:

The Fellowship of the Ring:

1) Gandalf - Sir Ian McKellen
2) Aragorn - Viggo Mortensen
3) Sam - Sean Astin

The Two Towers:

1) Gollum - Andy Serkis
2) Aragorn - Viggo
3) Wormtongue - Brad Dourif

The Return of the King:

1) Theoden - Bernard Hill
2) Sam - Sean
3) Aragorn - Viggo

Overall:

1) Aragorn - Viggo
2) Gandalf - Sir Ian
3) Sam - Sean

For me Aragorn, Gandalf and Sam were all cast perfectly. Some people say Aragorn should be older, but I never read him as looking old, even though by age he was. I pictured him just as Viggo was, with a few grey hairs in his beard and weather worn, just as he was in the movie. You can't say enough about Sir Ian, I mean he is practically dead on with Gandalf, from the voice and demeanor all on down to the persona. I think Sam was the best cast hobbit as well. He was simple in nature and yet conveyed his hard-nosed love for Frodo.

I'd also like to give some honorable mentions to Theoden, if it weren't for the Two Towers he would have been in my top 3 overall. He stole the show in RotK. I also think Saruman was cast pretty damn perfectly as well. Andy Serkis did an awesome job with Gollum, especially after knowing how much work actually went into that character, simply amazing.

Of course I think overall everyone was cast well. I don't think there was one weak link throughout this whole trilogy. It's just those listed above stick out to me the most...

*edit* I also want to give honorable mention to Boromir. I thought Sean Bean was awesome as well. I especially liked his scene, though small, in the TTT EE...

In this place will I abide, and my heirs, unto the ending of the world.'

'Then Tuor arrayed himself in the hauberk, and set the helm upon his head, and he girt himself with the sword; black were sheath and belt with clasps of silver. Thus armed he went forth from Turgon's hall, and stood upon the high terraces of Taras in the red light of the sun. None were there to see him, as he gazed westward, gleaming in silver and gold, and he knew not that in that hour he appeared as one of the Mighty of the West, and fit to be father of the kings of the Kings of Men beyond the Sea, as it was indeed his doom to be; but in the taking of those arms a change came upon Tuor son of Huor, and his heart grew great within him. And as he stepped down from the doors the swans did him reverence, and plucking each a great feather from their wings they proffered them to him, laying their long necks upon the stone before his feet; and he took the seven feathers and set them in the crest of his helm, and straightway the swans arose and flew north in the sunset, and Tuor saw them no more.' -Of Tuor and his Coming to Gondolin

Aw, only three? Hmm... this is gonna be tough. I think all of the actors matched their characters well, even if their character wasn't portrayed the way they were in the books. Fine, I'll try...

Gimli~John Rhys Davies
Aragorn~Viggo Mortensen
Galadriel~Cate Blanchett

The Two Towers:

Aragorn~Viggo Mortensen
Eowyn~Miranda Otto
Gandalf~Sir Ian McKellan

Return of the King:

Gimli~John Rhys Davies
Faramir~David Wenham
Theoden~Bernard Hill

Overall:

Gimli~John Rhys Davies
Aragorn~Viggo Mortensen
Faramir~David Wenham

The Fellowship of the Ring

Boromir - Sean Bean
Bilbo - Ian Holm
Gandalf - Ian Mckellan

The Two Towers

Wormtongue - Brad Dourif
Eomer - Karl Urban
Samwise - Sean Astin

The Ruturn of the King

Aragorn - Viggo Mortensen
Theoden - Bernard Hill
Faramir - David Wenham

Overall

And I can't go without saying these...

Pippin - Billy Boyd
Eowyn - Miranda Otto
Saruman - Christopher Lee
Gollum - Andy Serkis

Question is...Who was not cast perfectly? I think that there are so many great actors in this movie...The problem with some of them is they weren't given enough screen time and so, didn't have any time to 'prove themselves'. (or the script stunk and made them look stupid )

Didn't ANYONE like Elijah Wood as Frodo?!?!?! I mean, he carried the whole film, and who could forget those girly-boy tears he shed after Gandalf fell in Moria? They were real tears, goshdarnit!

Overall:
The Frodinator - Elijah Wood, a comprehensive performance.
Aragorn - Viggo Mortensen, excellent metamorphosis of char.
The Saminator - Sean Astin, the quiet achiever.

Special mentions to Sean Bean for bringing an unlikeable character (Boromir) to life and making us actually like him! And Ian Holm for Bilbo, he is a Hobbit personified! Well done.

Oscars, anyone?

Only three? hrmph

Fellowship
Gandalf- Sir Ian Mckellen
Boromir- Sean Bean
Aragorn- Viggo Mortensen

Two Towers
Gollum- Andy Serkis
Sam the Man- Sean Astin
Legolas- Orlando Bloom

Return of the King
Gandalf- Sir Ian McKellen
Pippin- Billy Boyd
Frodo- Elijah Wood (yes I liked him in this movie)

Honorable mention to everyone else.
I would say the majority of the casting was spot on, everyone was perfect. I only have minor complaints, and they are mostly on how the character was portrayed/changed by PJ, not on the actors themselves.

I actually did not like Elijah Wood for the most part, especially for the first two movies. I found him to be a whining wimp. Just MO, I don't mean to offend you.

Exactly. He did a remarkable job. When I first read LOTR it was almost "good riddance" to Boromir (and all the more surprise when book Faramir turned out to be my favorite LOTR character).

Oscars? If the Academy overcomes anti-fantasy bias, and views all three films as one story, then Sean Astin has a chance for Supporting Actor, but I have my doubts he'll evenl be nominated.

Lol I'm not offended, everyone has a different opinion and I encourage that! I tend to think that PJ wanted Frodo portrayed as a bit of a whiny wimp that had to always be saved by other people in the first 2 movies (Arwen,Aragorn,Sammy,Gollum), though, so you can't really blame the actor there. I think he did a terrific job of conveying the horror of Sauron's presence each time he put That Blasted Ring on, and the love/hate/pity thing going on with Gollum. Honestly, I can't think of any other contemporary actors who could have played this difficult role so well, as Elijah Wood has done.

So my pick for WORST THREE Performances (hehe):
1. The Uruk-hai leader dude from FoTR. Ugghh.
2. The Balrog...where were those fluffy slippers, darnit?
3. The Wargs & their Riders, complete nonsense taking away preciousss screen time from the gorgeous Eowyn. :>

Actually it's Sean Astin who plays Samwise. Sean Bean plays Boromir.

Aragorn's Dimple,
I did like Elijah in RoTK. His portrayal of Frodo on Mt. Doom was great and I just love when he claims the ring as his own. That look in his eye was just perfect. For the other two films, if he was supposed to be a wuss, well then I must say he plays it pretty good.

You dislike the Balrog?! What was wrong with him? I thought that scene was awesome!

This was a trickier task than I thought it would be when I first read the opening Post for the Thread, but it really made me think about which of the actors played their part most particularly well and most beliveably right the way through. Nice Thread Dúnedain!
