Rereading The Hobbit...

I was rereading The Hobbit, and I was wondering about something.

(spoilers below)









I noticed that the Lord of the Eagles seemed to pop up suddenly, and then disappear rather quickly; he stayed around just long enough to save Gandalf, Bilbo and the dwarves, but had no real importance to the plot other than that. So I was wondering- other than his very brief appearance at the Battle of Five Armies, does the Lord of the Eagles ever show up again, in LoTR or in The Silmarrilion?

In fact, I noticed several characters in The Hobbit that seemed to come uot of nowhere and disappear to nowhere, saving the travelers in the process. Besides the eagles, you (sort of) had Beorn, and, although Gandalf had a very great bearing on the story, he did the 'show up just in time to save them' thing quite often.

So, to repeat my question, did the Lord of the Eagles (or Beorn, for that matter) ever show up again?

Yes as far as I remember both do. Well Beorn sort of I believe Tolkien talks about his ancestors in the LotR and the Eagles come back also, rescuing Gandalf and such I don't remember details perhaps someone who has it all fresher in thier memory can clarify the instances. (Looks like time to read it again)

Yes, the eagles are in LOTR, but that is all I am going to say. If you haven't read LOTR yet, it would be a huge spoiler to reveal anything else.

Well this depends if you believe that Gwaihir from LotR is the unnamed "Lord of the Eagles" from Hobbit.

No, I read LoTR... I have read The Hobbit and LoTR, just not The Silmarrilon (which happens, by the way, to be sitting on a bookshelf not ten feet behind me).

And why is it there instead of in your hands?

The eagles also appear in Sil. Remember Thorondor with Hurin and Huor.

Some people likes to theorize with the eagles as "messengers" of Manwe. That would explain their appearances ala "Deus ex machina"

Well, I am not reading the Silmarrilion because...

1. I am rereading The Hobbit and LoTR.

2. I am planning to read Dante's The Devine Comedy and Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment after that.

Gwaihir the Windlord was in LotR. He could have been the same Lord of the Eagles as in The Hobbit, or one of his kin.

The King of the Eagles, Thorondor played a fairly important role in The Silmarillion. He is probably one of the ancestors of both Gwaihir and the Lord of the Eagles(assuming they aren't the same being).
