Entmoot Timeline: September 1999-January 2000 and beyond

Well, today is the four-month anniversary of the board's opening, and I thought it might be interesting to reflect on some of the memorable points in Entmoot's history Late August/Early September 1999: The topic of a Tolkien discussion board comes up in an IM conversation between myself and Tater. September 18th, 1999: I create the board and offer to make Ryan6233 a moderator if he posts. He does so, and becomes the second member and first moderator. September 19th: Darth Tater shows up and is promoted to Moderator (don't you wish it was that easy to get a position these days? ) September 22nd: Darth Tater's Empire forum is created, followed a few days later by Darth Tater's Secret Starship. September 27th: Ryan6233 and Darth Tater are promoted to the status of Administrator. October 6th: The name of board is changed from "Benjamin's Tolkien Board" to "Entmoot." October 7th: The "Middle Earth" forum is opened. October 20th: The Council of Elrond is the first board to be put on Entmoot's Ezboard ring. October 24th: The Entmoot Mail Service ( http://entmoot.zzn.com ) and the URL redirection ( http://entmoot.cjb.net ) are activated. October 30th: The One Ring and Son of a Hutt are made moderators. November 1st: The current Entmoot banner, created by Tater, goes up. November 3rd: The 1000th message at the board is posted, coincidentally in the topic that charts Entmoot's progress. November 9th: The "Books and Comics" Star Wars forum is renamed "Expanded Universe." November 19th: The Riftwar Forum is opened. November 20th: I start the policy of greeting new members in the announcements up top. December 4th: Ryan6233 revokes his own admin privileges after "taking over the board" (don't ask ) December 9th: Anduin is made a moderator. December 20th: The 100th member arrives at the board. December 26th: The Official Rules of Entmoot, Version 1.0 are put into effect. January 12th, 2000: Anduin becomes an Administrator. January 13th: The two Tater forums are merged. January 17th: The Riftwar forum is converted into a General Fantasy forum. January 18th: The board turns 4 months old, and I post this thread :P

Re: Entmoot Timeline: September 1999-January 2000 and beyond

This seems to be the perfect place to post this message i am about to post. Origianally I was going to make a new thread, but this is good enough. I hearby resign from Entmoot. I will no longer post here, or even visit here anymore. The magic of Entmoot's first days are over. There is no more respect for one of the original members of the board. Ben constantly refuses to consider promoting me, and then promotes people I dont even know. Well, that's it. Good bye. January 18, 2000-gdl96 leaves Entmoot. Have a nice day.

Re: gdl's comment

Well, I've thought about your message some more. I'm sorry that anyone is leaving, and I don't dispute your decision. However, your statement about my "refusal to promote" you is interesting. I sincerely hope that the goal of any poster at this board is to have fun and be able to discuss topics, not become moderator. Most people will not become moderators here. It is an interesting phenomenon that ezboard people seem determined to become a moderator at every board possible, regardless of the size. At the JC, there are 20,000 members and something like 10 admins. Most people know that they will never hold a position of "power" there, and yet they post anyway. Asking to be an admin is asking to be laughed at. Additionally, you are a great person, gdl, but please remember that this board was created for the purpose of discussing J.R.R. Tolkien. You openly disdain his books. That's fine too, but it is highly unlikely that I would make someone a moderator at a Tolkien board who hadn't finished a single Tolkien book. Had I started DarthNut's board, you'd probably be a moderator by now. Of course, the board probably would have been dead a month ago as well :P I hope I didn't sound too harsh, and of course you are welcome to post here anytime in the future that you want. I just wanted to address the moderator issue. It's not all that exciting being a moderator, really

Re: gdl's comment

Good job on your board, Ben. Me, I have no ambitions. The only reason I even started one was for fun, to see how it worked!

Re: gdl's comment

Yes, I agree Ben. Look at the JC. It is VERY hard to be an admin. I don't know what these people think.

Re: gdl's comment

My guess is he's greg and this is five days since he left or something like that. I'm to lazy to check IP's now, but I will later. The IP's are very similor, but he uses aol and the aol IP's change every time, so it could be someone else. Might be MerloMo too.

Yeah, looks like it's MerloMo. All the clues point towards it being him.

Re: Entmoot Timeline: September 1999-January 2000 and beyond

"but it is highly unlikely that I would make someone a moderator at a Tolkien board who hadn't finished a single Tolkien book" WOW!! I'm glad I finished one... it was a struggle. MerloMo doesn't have AOL, but that looks like him counting down the days until he's unbanned, but since he's violating his suspension it may increase...

Yeah, it's obviously MerloMo. This may increase it to a permanent ban... who knows?

MerloMo, this is your last warning: if you create another username at the board before your suspension is up, it will be increased to two weeks.
