Anyway, I'd ask him to highlight which particular parts of his mythos' was he leaning towards, ie orks from men, or elves, and how myths transformed fits in with everything.

Edited to fix two typos. What can I say? My fingers are cold.
Hey now, I said those were CANDIDATES.

I'd go with: Can you tell me a story?

Was there a piece of music that inspired the creation, and if so, can I please hear it?

I could read the books to get his stories, but knowing the music would make me happy. Mmm...music.

And I DO mean ONE question!! *Frowns in the general direction of Earniel* And can we please try and keep away from the Balrog....?
I PROTEST! I wasn't the first one who gave multiple answers by far! I was only being a sheep! *continues bleating for good measure*

I would ask him to tell me stories about what happened to Gandalf before, after, and inbetween The Hobbit and LOTR, including the weird things he must've seen when he died after that whole balrog thing.

That, or "Why haven't you haunted Peter Jackson's nightmares yet??"

Tolkien is my role model. So deeply religious, such unmovable faith, such beautiful works, such a spectacular imagination...

Yeah, we'd have to ask about Eru's gender. So as to stop the debates between you and I, Gwaimir. Eru is NOT male!

That is a good one.
I always refuse to accept that he is male.

What's it like being dead?

But seriously I'd ask him about the fate of hobbits.

OK, I've changed my mind - something he'd actually know the answer to...........Was Sauron a bed wetter?

Hobbits are Men; just short, fat, and fuzzy-footed.

Well, people, he always refers to Eru as He. If He were asexual (or omnisexual) he would refer to Him as It, or Heshe, or something.

I always thought of Eru as a he.

I know what to ask.
What happened to the Entwives and do they ever return?
