What is your favourite poem/song by Tolkien?

Tolkien wrote so many stunning poems that I thought there aught to be such a thread

The Fight between Finrod and Sauron
from Lay of Leithian / Silm. ch. 19 (p 171 in my book)

One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them".
can't leave that unoticed.

Beren's song of parting, the one that begins: "Farewell sweet earth and northern sky..."
I LOVE this one!

ah, yes - fabulous!

Speaking of fighting, also Fingolfin's challenge to Morgoth!

Also from LOTR, "Gil-Galad was an elven king..." For some reason, that one really touches my heart. It's what got me interested in the Sil and the HoME books

The Road goes ever On is the one I find myself recalling in the various exigencies of life!

That one is my favorite. Makes me wish Sam had listened harder and longer, I don't care how many shivers he got.

Errantry. Hands down. It's just a... fun poem.

Then The Mewlips, and The Hoard. Both more dark and less silly, but fun in their own way.

FYI: If you've never read Tolkien's stand-alone poetry, you're missing out on the best stuff.

"I sit beside the fire and think
of all that I have seen"...

This is most haunting and beautiful poem of all.
I think in this poem Tolkien expressed his own feeling about the passing time.

Oh yeah, and also the three songs that Aragorn and Legolas made for Boromir's funeral. These are so touching!

EDIT:

I agree. Them and The Road goes ever on and on.

I believe they can be found in a charming little volume called the Tolkien Reader. I don't know how easy that will be to find (it's actually not suprising you wouldn't have heard of it), but it contains a handful of poems by Tolkien not directly related to Middle Earth.

Errantry starts on page 211.

Actually, you might remember parts of it as having been in my signature for some time. And I used an excerpt from the Mewlips before that.

Thanks for the tip , I have seen this book many times before but I thought it only had short stories like Leaf by Niggle.

Whenever I read "The Mewlips", I think of "The Hoard of the Gibbelins" by Lord Dunsany. I wonder if Tolkien knew of him. I'll bet he did.

*/grabs Beren by the collar.

Leaf by Niggle is a great story. One of the best Tolkien wrote. You need to read it. Now!

Anybody who hasn't read Tolkien's short stories is missing some of his best writing. Just so you know.

What about it is there not to understand?

Yes, "Leaf" is a GREAT story! Please read it, Beren!

And I also love Boromir's funeral dirge, like you do. "He tarries, and I grieve ...."

I think that "Kortirion among the Trees" is the best he has written.

I also like Galadriel's message to Aragorn:
"Where are now the Dunedain, Elessar, Elessar?"
