Saddam's Letter to Us

Apperantly Saddam Hussein has written us, the American People, a letter.

From what I've heard, it seems to be a mixture of John Murtha and Howard Dean...does Saddam listen to all this debate intently while eating his nacho Doritos?

What do you guys know about this? And what do you think?

That would be this John Murtha?

Quote:
He learned about military service from the bottom up, beginning as a raw recruit when he left Washington and Jefferson College in 1952 to join the Marines out of a growing sense of obligation to his country during the Korean War. There he earned the American Spirit Honor Medal, awarded to fewer than one in 10,000 recruits. He rose through the ranks to become a drill instructor at Parris Island and was selected for Officer Candidate School at Quantico, Virginia. He then was assigned to the Second Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. In 1959, Captain Murtha took command of the 34th Special Infantry Company, Marine Corps Reserves, in Johnstown. He remained in the Reserves after his discharge from active duty until he volunteered for Vietnam in 1966-67, where he served as the S-2 intelligence officer for the 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division and received the Bronze Star with Combat "V", two Purple Hearts and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. The official notification of award for his Bronze Star and Purple Hearts are available to view here. He remained in the Reserves until his retirement. This first-hand knowledge of military and defense issues has made him a trusted adviser to presidents of both parties and one of the most effective advocates for the national defense in Washington. At the request of Presidents and Speakers of the House, he served as chairman of delegations monitoring elections in the Philippines, El Salvador, Panama and Bosnia.

He was awarded the Navy Distinguished Service Medal by the Marine Corps Commandant when he retired from the Marines.
I mean I know it's obligatory to smear anyone who ever questions the wisdom of Dear Leader, but did it ever occur to you that, just maybe, he says what he says because, unlike some others in government, he actually knows what he's talking about?

Unless you want to tell me that things in Iraq have been getting better since he made his comments?

You mean, Saddam isn't the SAME PERSON as John Murtha?

I'm not attacking John Murtha. All I was saying was that Saddam, apperantly has been reading/listening to SOMEONE, and that someone sounds like he might be John Murtha.

Things haven't been getting better in Iraq, they're about the same.

Here's some links to the background:

Saddam's letter: http://www.sweetness-light.com/archi...merican-people

Basically, a gift to the pro-war argument.

A story about Murtha from the same right-wing commentator: http://www.sweetness-light.com/archi...o-stay-in-iraq

It is amazing that in 5 years they have yet to come up with a better argument than "don't stab our troops in the back" for people who question the ongoing Iraq war.

Well, if your definition of "the same" = "twice as bad", I suppose that's true.

Average number of daily attacks by insurgents in June 2006: 90
Quote:
UN officials said that the number of violent deaths had climbed steadily since at least the middle of last year. During the first six months of this year, the civilian death toll jumped 77 per cent, from 1778 in January to 3149 in June.

This sharp rise reflects the dire security situation as sectarian violence worsens and Iraqi and US forces have been unable to stop it.

In its report, the UN said 14,338 civilians had died violently in Iraq in the first six months of the year.
http://www.theage.com.au/news/world/...166455552.html

And the latest news? Three years after the fall of Baghdad the US has to scrape up forces from everywhere else (including the last reserves in Kuwait) to rush them to the capital to stop it dissolving into total civil war.

I suppose it's "the same" in the way that a person falling off a 100-storey building is "the same" when he's falling past the 95th floor as he is when he's falling past the 5th floor.
