Connecting the Movies

Does anyone else feel like you can't 'connect' the two movies? I watched both last night, and I still thought of them as 'two' movies, not one. I just thought that I would be able to think of them together better.

Maybe I watched too much of the credits or something?

I kind of know what you mean. The two movies have a very different feel, even though they continue the same story. I think the opening of TTT is really cool, but maybe it would have been better to open with the scene where Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli made the decision to follow the Uruks instead of Frodo and Sam. Then switch to Frodo and Sam as it did in the first movie, going to that night, where he could then dream of Gandalf and the Balrog. Does that make sense? Basically start TTT with the last 3 or 4 minutes of FOTR to set the mood and story.
