Simple hobbits have lots of friends by Michael Martinez

A new, brilliant article from Michael Martinez, make sure you read it. It is made painfully obvious in this article that the idea of thieves' guilds in Tolkien's Middle-earth does belong. As sure as Elves have pointed ears

A very interesting way to view those "innocent" hobbits...

Althought the stuff like " supposedlu he went out to help take out a dragon in distant lands" (or whatever he said) and to take out a guy name Sauron who was threatening their little whatever...what was meant by that?

Re: Simple hobbits have lots of friends by Michael Martinez

He was making his point that thieves' guilds and mob style organizations don't belong in Tolkien's Middle-earth. His point is that people who want that don't seem to be paying attention to how Tolkien depicted the northwest of his world. It was one long sarcastic stab at the Tharbad-as-thief-hideout enthusiasts.

A turf war between the Oldbucks and the Tooks over wine producing regions? Drive-by swordings? Oh puhleez...

Never again let it be said that Martinez hath no sense of humour !!

Alcuin - I'm curious, with all your interest in Michael Martinez's threads...

Did you know that he has published two books, each of which is a collection of his articles? I own both, and you could probably get them from Amazon. They are: Understanding Middle Earth and Visualizing Middle Earth... good stuff!

Just looked online... available surprisingly cheap!
