I absolutely, 100%, no doubt about it, believe dragons existed.

Maybe this should merge with that impossible to find thread about the Discovery channel show that explored the how and why if dragons did exist.

This thread is slightly different though.

I don't think dragons existed, but I love the legends!

I think it's possible that there was some sort of fire-breathing, flying lizard thing once upon a time, but I'm not holding out much hope, since it seems like anything that could breath fire AND fly would be able to outlast most of the other animals on the planet and still be around today :P.

Sure. Perhaps not a fire-breathing lizard, but maybe a remnant of the dinosaurs' time plus a little embellishment.

basically speaking

In Chinese mythology there are five types of dragon:-

Those guarding the gods and emperors
Those controlling the wind and rain
Earthly dragons which deepened the rivers and seas
Guardians of hidden treasure
The first dragon

in jung xiao, IIRC, the dragons are lizards wich are of immense size, but kindly to man, and they can't fly, and can't breathe fire

I absolutely believe that dragons once existed, just as many other species have existed and become extinct. The other day, I went to the L.A. County Museum of Art and was looking at the medieval european exhibitions; there are some beautiful paintings from the thirteenth century of knights fighting dragons. I'm sure the dragons didn't spit fire, thats just silly, but I'm just as sure that at least some of these dragons could fly, and that eventually at some point in this time period they were rendered extinct.

Alligator boots? What do you mean, alligator boots, I don't get it... No, I mean, some of these paintings depicted dragons in various situations with people - being battled, or put on a leash, or put in cages, stuff like that. The ways in which the dragons were rendered suggested more realism than fantasy; I suppose one would have to see this artwork in person to draw one's own conclusion. Anyway, all this aside, personally I've decided that I would like for dragons to have existed, so for me they did. To hell with the naysayers...

You know... alligator boots? Purses? They used to be a BIG thing, and then after a while people started learning to make faux-alligator skin so that they wouldn't be hunted out of existance (not that I would complain if they were, mind you ).

So, you know? Alligator boots? The dragons became extinct because everyone wanted dragon boots and the ASPCA hadn't shown up yet .

Hell, I think so. Why not? Perhaps who we must blame for their extinction were those dratted medieval Itallian Fashion designers....Mayhaps dragon hide was the new In Thing for fall all those years ago?

Actually I blame HARRY POTTER!!!!

Remember how they needed DRAGON hide gloves? *gasp*

JKRowling has singlehandedly (single pinnedly?) brought down the race of the last, noble dragons .
