Good Commentators and Bad Ones

We've all read, I suppose, a number of books on and about Tolkien. I'd be interested in having Entmooters list say the top 3 choices and why those. And then list the bottom 3 and why those are bad.

I've read fery few things by commentators. I prefer to make my mind directly from the sorce, but if I have to pick some then my choice is...

Christopher Tolkien.

Okay, and also Michael Martinez.

On the bad side, I've seen very stupid things written by "commentators" but I don't remember their names.

Commentators? Hmmm...

Well Humphprey Carpenter's Biography of Tolkien, as well as Michael Coren's are both good, is that what you mean?

Not really, no. I mean people like Shippey, Day, and others who are writing about Tolkien and his work, interpreting Tolkien and his work.

Would Robert Foster fit in this catagory. I think he's one of the best, but a little out dated. J.E.A. Tyler is also good, and no doubt about Tom Shippey
