Lake Town

I have a question about the name of Lake Town- is Lake Town the real name of the town that Bard the Bowman lives in or does it have another name? I remember the Great River being called the River Carnen in ROTK...

On the maps, I think it's "Esgaroth upon the Long Lake." Or Esgaroth upon the Lake, for short. (And Just Esgaroth for shorter, I guess.)

Not to put you on the spot... but do you know where the 'River Carnen' reference is? My LotR map shows the 'River Running' - but lots of things get more than one name (or is 'carnen' Elvish for 'running'? I'd never know! )

In Appendix A, Durin's folk, and in Appendix B the tale of years, Carnen is another name for Redwater, the river running from the Iron Hills to the Sea of Rhun.

You can look at the map in LOTR and see that the 'Running River' is Celduin and the 'Redwater' is Carnen.
You can also see in that map the name of the Lake-town, as Bombadillo said.

Bilbo says in his birthday in the beginning of the book: "It is also, if I may be allowed to refer to ancient history, the anniversary of my arrival by barrel to Esgaroth on the Long Lake..." - which proves that Esgaroth is the same town Bilbo visited in his journey.

More like Lake Champlain, I'd think... the sixth Great Lake! That would make Erebor and Dale right about where Montreal is! And the configuration of Champlain is a lot closer, right? Size too, I think.

Agreed! And there's supposed to be a monster living in it's depths, too! (Maybe Smaug didn't really die!??) And Mont Real (Mount Royal) could be the Lonely Mountain...hmmm. Tolkien's geography might be based on real places, just chopped up and put wherever he wanted them.

And as far as the sixth Great Lake, there is a group of folks in Michigan stumping to make Lake St. Clair (get out your geography books, kiddies...) the sixth Great Lake, not because of it's size, but because of its location as the connection between lakes Huron and Erie...
