LotR vs. D&D magic: Which is cooler

As is no doubt evident, this thread was inspired by the Gandalf v. Harry Potter thread. Which do you think is cooler; the subtler magic of Middle-Earth, or the flashy magic of D&D?

My vote is for Middle-Earth.

D&D - Dungeons and Dragons, the original fantasy role-playing game.

I used to play it in the late 70s (yes, I'm that old) but it seems to have been reincarnated as the totally awesome computer game Baldur's Gate. Do people still play D&D? I thought everything went Warhammer around the mid-80s? (D&D only requires a pencil, some paper and some dice, hence was never going to be a big money-spinner!)

Anyway, ME magic rules even though

I used to play it in the late 90. (no, I'm not very old )

I go for ME. It's much more mystical than the flashy D&D magic...

I am biased towards middle-earth just like most everyone here. However, I'm a bit puzzled why the question was asked. I mean no slight of any sort but I don't see D&D winning out especially on a Tolkien inspired forum.

Again, my apologies. I just woke up too early...

Fire? Balls?

Yeah D&D is still going strong......don't play it myself anymore but apparently the game is getting a new lease of life since the 3rd edition was printed...

Hmm the only D&D literature I've read was those god-awful Dragonlance and Forgotten Realms books, the D&D magic did not work at all well in those novels

Where as Middle Earth magic worked very well, in LotR et al.....

Pretending to fling a 6d6 fireball at a bunch of orcs may seem cool around a role-playing table but in literature it sucks donkeys

Super-geek here. Yes, people still play D&D, and alas, I am one of them. I love D&D magic, but I love Tolkien too. They're both great to me. Harry Potter on the other hand...

I thought it was the 4th, but then again I'm known for being wrong

I thought the 5th level ability was to suck a bear.

D & D magic is more visually appealing. I haven't role-played, but I've played lots of games run on a D & D engine, and I always find them to be quite fun; especially how you can build up your skill-levels to wreak more havoc.

However, like the majority, I will have to side with Middle-Earth's more insideous "magic."
