Middle Earth Olympics: Tharbad

Once every four years * the various peoples of Middle Earth set aside their differences and come together to compete in competitions of athleticism, sportsmanship and endurance - The Middle Earth Olympics!

* Note that the events recounted in "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings" occurred in off-years when no Olympics were held.

This year's version of the MEO is held in Tharbad, where the city is being repopulated (get to work, peoples of Middle Earth!) and whose bridge is currently undergoing major reconstruction. Naturally, air quality has been part of the story leading up to these games - but after a temporary halt in the construction activities - leaving only a single lane open on the bridge for the 60 league cycling endurance race and later Marathon Run - the Games go on!

The Middle Earth Olympic Torch has just been lit, by the pyrotechnics of one Grey Pilgrim. The only question that remains is whether that WAS INDEED the voice of Tom Bombadil singing that opening number, or if it was lip-synced by the Witch King.

Entrants are now being taken for Olympic Events. Events and teams already registered are as follows (first week only):

Beleg Strongbow of Doriath
Bard of Esgaroth
Legolas of Mirkwood

Wrestling
Elendil of Arnor

I never quite understood why beach volley is considered an olympic sport.

I'm betting only for the sake of the women bikini's... No, Galadriel should participate in the races. 100m or 200m would be marvelous for her. She won many medals at the Aman Games before those were discontinued...

I'm thinking Finrod Felagund should be allowed to enter the wrestling competition. His match against the werewolf in the Sauron's Prisoner Tournament was the talk of the yén!

I see Eärendil's excluded from the Sailing competition! Why, isn't he currently holding the Arda record for sailing the furthest and the highest? Or is he disqualified for sailing the skies instead of the seas?

- Enter whatever women you want! I'm sure many of them are more athletic than we know about, and I'm sure I didn't think of them all. And - we can pretty well guess we'd get good athleticism from Haleth, Elwing, Luthien, Goldberry (say - enter her in swimming! "River man's daughter", for sure!), etc.

- Yes, by all means enter FF in the wrestling!
- Earendil hasn't entered the sailing yet, but I suppose he could.
- Galadriel will certainly enter several of the Track and Field Events (in addition to those races you name, I bet she'd be a top performer in the pentathlon - or heptathlon, or whatever multisport event the MEO features)
- For the Beach Volleyball, I was thinking of G's height - and had just seen the USA women win a match pretty handily. I could just see G & E being a similarly unstoppable duo. And... maybe they wear something other than bikinis here in ME.
