Quote Game - Part 9

Here we go with part 9. The same rules apply as before.

Basically, you take a quote and remove every second letter, and put a slash between words, and punctuation marks. A solution must include all words solved correctly and the correct speaker identified. Whoever solves the last element, be it quote, speaker, or both, posts the next one. It is not necessary for the one solving to say who it is said to, anything about the context, or what book it's found in.

Example: "I/_i_l/_i_e/_o_/a/_a_e/,/_n_/I/_h_l_/c_l_/y_u/_t_n_."

Answer: "I will give you a name, and I shall call you Sting." Bilbo Baggins (from The Hobbit)

Anything from the books: The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion, or Unfinished Tales is fair game. No movie quotes.

Suggestions for posting:
Some gamers find this method best, fastest, easiest and most accurate. When you've found your quote, type it all in without blanks, simply using the '/' instead of a space, as well as before and after each punctuation mark. Just after a punctuation mark can be a convenient place for a carriage return, if the spacing looks good. After typing, check for spelling and to see that all the words are correct. Then go through and replace every other letter with an underscore '_' - this goes quickly if you use the 'forward arrow' key to advance, use the 'delete' key and then add the underscore where the letter was.

Oh - and we try our best to solve the quotes without looking them up. However, if the one who posted the quote is away or not responding, a player may look up an attempted full solution to see if it was correct before moving on and posting the next quote.

I believe Earniel is up next to start us off.

Quote:
Or... maybe better to have two separate threads - a special one for HoME, and then everything else. I'm just afraid those who consider themselves 'basic' players (some of who I think have only read Hobbit & LOTR) would feel sidelined when a 'difficult' quote came up.
I don't think we should split up the game, though. The players that stick to basic can still decipher the cut-up words, but they'd at least have a warning that they might not be able to identify the speaker. It's very rare for someone to solve one quote, speaker and all, in one go. So the 'basic' players would not be find themselves excluded from participating at least a little in the 'difficult' quotes.

Also, already part NINE? Whoa.

There is one point that you haven't noticed, and that is the secret entrance.
For see that rune on the West side, and the hand pointing to it from the other runes?
That marks a hidden passage to the Lower Halls.

From The Hobbit. I think Gandalf speaking to Thorin and the Dwarves.
(could be Elrond, but I think it's Gandalf)

Awesome, DPR (if you're right, of course). See, this is why I need to re-read The Hobbit.

I'm not certain about a couple words ("West" capitalized?) but they all seem to fit and make sense. That's more than half the battle.

EDIT: I just checked so that we could move on. I was correct, so here goes another:

Y_t/_t/_a_/i_/t_e/_o_g/./
_o_/w_i_e/_h_u/_e_t/_n/t_e/_e_v_n_/a_d/_i_h/_l_o/_u_l_/t_e/_l_u_s/_n_/
p_u_e_/o_t/_h_/r_i_s/,/_/l_f_e_/u_/t_e/_r_n_h_s/_f/_r_a_/t_e_s/_o/_e_e_v_/t_e_/,/
_n_/s_m_/s_n_/t_/I_ú_a_a_/a_i_/t_e/_i_d/_n_/t_e/_a_n/.

I know this quote. It's on the tip of my tongue. And it's driving me nuts.

Yet it was in the song.
How while /_h_u/ went in the Heavens and with Ulmo /_u_l_/ the /_l_u_s/ and /p_u_e_/ out /_h_/r_i_s/, I lifted up the /_r_n_h_s/ of great tears to /_e_e_v_/ them,
and some sang to Ilúvatar /a_i_/ the /_i_d/ and the /_a_n/.

I had just re-read the Hobbit to research the RPG spider-scene. But hoom, hasty folk! You missed a word! 'For' is incorrect.

Yet it was in the song. For while thou went in the Heavens and with Ulmo /_u_l_/ the clouds and poured out the rains, I lifted up the branches of great trees to receive them, and some sang to Ilúvatar amid the wind and the rain.

Speaker is Yavanna Kementari.

Holy cow, you people. You can get a lot done in two days. What kind of spare time do you have???? Can I borrow a bit?

I'll wait for the DPR to confirm... doesn't seem like there's much I can do if I confirm it.

"went" is incorrect. I knew that word would throw people. Everything else looks right.

Actually, "went" is only one letter off. Think archaic words. Kinda goes with the "thou" before it. (should I give this many hints?)

Yes, but do you remember Gandalf's words:
Even Gollum may have something yet to do?
But for him, Sam, I could not have destroyed the Ring.
The quest would have been in vain, even at the bitter end.
So let us forgive him! For the Quest is achieved, and now, all is over.
I am glad you are here with me. Here at the end of all things, Sam.

Dang, DPR, ten minutes. Give someone else a chance, will you?

EDIT: As for including HoME and Children of Húrin, I agree with Eärniel. Everybody has texts they're more comfortable with than others. Yes, I've read them all, but I read The Hobbit a loooooooooong time ago, and have no desire ever to do so again. So I'm not going to get Hobbit quotes to save my life. Or the really obscure non-Eldar related Lord of the Rings quotes, as the history of Hobbits and Men in Middle-earth just isn't my interest. But I can still have fun trying to guess these quotes - the way we have this set up here anyone can participate, even if they don't know the quote when it's finally revealed.

In addition, if people have read The Silmarillion and The UT, they have a fair-to-middling chance of being able to guess a speaker, as most characters in the HoME are in one of those two texts.

We could do a sort of a test-run with including the categories for a few months and evaluate afterwards. If most participants of the game dislike the distinction between basic and difficult categories, we can scrap the idea and go back to the way we do it now.
