I don't think I like that Battle of the 5 armies thing with Legolas. But when Bilbo sees the elves having their party in the forest and picks out the elf-king, I don't see why Legolas couldn't be there. Or as one of the elves when bilbo sneaks around here and there in the caves. Or even as the "ambassador" at the end. There are plenty of possible appearances.

i think russell crowe or eric bana as bard would be cool, and gloin is in lotr he just doesnt have a speaking role http://www.warofthering.net/quintess...scene3.htm#top they could use him if hes a good actor. i dunno about anyone else but gimli is supposed to be in the blue mountains cuz he was too young to join the group. legolas could have a non-speaking role i guess in mirkwood but i dont think it should be a major role.

i like the idea of russel crowe or eric bana as bard, especially when bard has to fight, crowe could pull out his gladiator moves

exactly! i havent read the book in a while so i forget what the major roles are. theres bilbo and gandalf, the 13 dwarves (but they would probably concentrate on a few, or even put less of them in the movie so it would be easier for audiences), elrond, beorn, gollum, goblin king, thranduil, master of esgaroth, bard. they should definately keep the actors for the characters who are in lotr. i think that they might do it because new line cinema said that they wanted to do it but pj was busy with king kong

The thirteen dwarves are supposed to be confusing. Bilbo was certainly confused by them. Why else would they be color-coded? That's something that should be, if anything, played up rather than played down.

Oh. Just for the record, when I said some of the suggestions were 'a bit silly' earlier in this thread, the meaning I was trying to get across is that they were incredibly, mind bogglingly stupid.

bearing in mind Hobbit was a children's story, so the colour-coding would have to be amusing for a younger generation also.

[In reply to the 13 Dwarves disscusion,] Consider how Gimli looked in The Lord of the Rings films. When we did see John Rhys-Davies as Gimli we only saw a little portion of his face, between his brows and his nose. He was also wearing a full facial mask so I don't think the different yet similar looks of the dwarves would be so hard to deal with. The difficult part of the 13 dwarves is finding 13 shorter people to do all of the doubling.

As for the casting here are some returning actors that damn well better be in it:
Sir Ian McKellan as Gandalf the Grey.
Ian Holm as Bilbo Bagins(unless a very similar looking young lad can be found).
John Rhys-Davies as Gimlis Father Gloin.
Hugo Weaving as Elrond of Imladris.
Perhaps a cameo of Legolas in Mirkwood played by Orlando Bloom.
After watching Troy I could see Eric Bana playing the part of Bard of Laketown.
*and a few possible Dwarves:
Brian Cox
Brendan Gleeson
Rip Torn
Jon Favreau
Gene Hackman
and I like as stated previously Peter Jackson as Bombur! Excellent Idea.
I feel Christopher Lee should also be placed in this film in some way as he is such a Tolkien nut, perhapas as a narrator!?

*Search IMDB.com to check out some of those actors.

That's like a 50 billion dollar cast list! As in, it would cost some studio something like billions to be able to retain all those heavy hitters. Superstars ain't cheap.

I don't see Viggo as a dwarf, at all, nor Johnny Depp, no way! And no way do I see Pretty Boy Pitt doing a Beorn. Beorn would have to be someone big, and gruff, and intense, and "beary" - The others look all right, but the thing is, they're all regular-sized men, so the whole movie would have to be scaled - the sets, everything, done in major scale, to make everybody look Dwarven-sized.

Oh yeah. ANd the spiders! Duh!
Your right about the sets being scaled, but couldn't they make it like LotR? I mean, John Rhys Davies is taller than Legolas's portrayer (Orlando Bloom); and in the movie he's about three feet shorter.
Elijah Wood, (Frodo), Sean Astin (Sam), Dom *whatever his name is (Merry) and Billy Boyd (Pippin) are all full grown twenties. But in the movie they are three feet high. They digitally remastered them and in some shots made them walk on there knees and added the computerized feet.
But otherwise, it would be on the *coughs* expensive side to keep all those super stars.

Me either. Nor Orlando Bloom!

Robbie Coltrane(?) (Hagrid from HP) could probably do a good Beorn...He's quite "beary"
