Anyway, I didn't _hate_ the animated Hobbit. I _really_ enjoyed the music, gandalf's voice, gollum's voice, and smaug's voice.
I especially liked Gandalf's intro. "Long ago, when this ancient world wasn't quite so ancient..." I was _not_ crazy about the elf-things that were in mirkwood...Not to mention the goblins were just ludicrously short-legged. Kinda like the Tasmanian Devil. |

The goblins reminded me of Jabba the Hutt.
I watched the Hobbit last year and had mixed feelings about it. The characters looked awful and they surely didn't put a lot of effort into the animations. Fili and Kili were cute though with their blond little beards. I enjoyed the singing, even though it sounded really bad at times. It helped bring the movie closer to the book imo. I liked how the elves look. Not at all like in the artworks by John Howe, Alan Lee and the other famous concept artists. When I first read The Hobbit (which was my first book by Tolkien) I envisioned the elves looking like that basically. It wasn't until I later read the Silmarillion that I understood that the elves were in fact beautiful beings. Anyway, the movie brought out the same feelings I felt when I read the book for the first time years ago.

I don't think I've ever seen the animated Hobbit, though I did see (and instantly forget) the Bakshi version. It looks like its making a quick comeback with the new FotR movie's popularity, as it was in one of the cashier shelves noirmally reserved for new releases in my local Best Buy. I think I'll make a effort though to rent it from my library.

I was also at the cast party for Hobbit with Willow Oran. I also agree completely with everything she said. There were, however, two things she didn't mention which truly disturbed me to the very seat of my soul.
First, Gandalf. Everything about him. I played Gandalf, and it shamed me to watch his portrayal in the movie. What was up with that nose? I mean, really, no one, not even wizards, has that long of a nose. It looked like they had taken a drawing of a stick and attached it to his face! Though, I did think that it was quite cool that lightning followed him everywhere he went. Second, where were everyone's pants?!? I felt like I was being violated every time a man sat down and didn't cross his legs. Must get rid of bad image......thanks again, Willow!

Indeed, the missing pants were rather traumatizing. So was the way they had Bill the Pony get eaten by the squid thing in LOTR. And what was up with the battle of the random dots? We also had the animated RotK at the cast party but nobody wanted to watch it after the other two. The anmated movies are really quite painful to watch, especially if you've just finished performing a superior version.

The ponies in the Hobbit didn't get away though. They were eaten by those things that were supposedly goblins but looked more like overgrown walruses with fur and legs.

I saw those movies as well. They were very dissapointing, and I nearly fell asleep. My sis kept me awake.

i saw this movie a long long time ago. it was the first i had heard of tolkien...very long ago. i hated it. i absolutely hated it. its not that i thought it was bad. i dont remember whether it was bad or not. i just thought it was the scariest thing since the brave little toaster. the spiders were just too much. i probably had nightmares for a week. that was back in the day though. i was afraid of the animated robin hood too.

What i would like to know is why there is someone who is unregistered, posting and replying to himself on the same thread. but to set the record straight, here it is.
The movie that only goes halfway through way by Ralph Bashki, and that was terrible. There was a movie of the hobbit, and one of RoTK, and those were by Arthur Rankin and Jules Bass, and they were pretty good.

You thought the Hobbit movie was good? Admittedly I am biased against the cartoon failure because I acted as Gandalf in a production of Hobbit, but still, I don't see how that travesty of nature could be called "good".

I too do not see how it good be considered good. But I'm biased against it because I played Elrond in the production of the Hobbit WiseWizard mentioned. I was better at it, just as the rest of the cast was better at the people they had been cast as.

That reminds me....what was up with those stars circling Elrond's head in the cartoon?

Eru only knows.
Personally, I thought that all the animated Tolkien was a travesty of nature (I think that's the right phrase...). In other words, it was the most terribly horribly awfully disgutingly icky piece of adaption work I've very seen in my life. Er...so yes, I disliked it. -tano
