7 Killed in Oslo in terror attack bombing!

At 3.20 this afternoon two horrific explosions rocked the very centre of the Norwegian capital. Windows were blown out and buildings heavily damaged. Broken glass and pieces of buildings covered the streets in the aftermath.
At the moment police report 7 killed and a unknown number of injured.

The main buildings that were damaged, are two of the buildings with government offices. Window panes were blown out several quarters away. I'm on holiday so I'm not currently in Oslo, but my boss texted my colleagues to tell us - our offices are on the third floor and our window panes were not broken, but window panes on the ground floor are broken.

It's reasonable to think that the two incidents are connected.

Edit:
The police now says that they are connected.
10 young people were killed in the second incident.

And it turned out to be so many more than just 10 ...

Insanity is the only explanation for these acts. Apparently the madman was extreme right and had been active in several discussion forums. The massacre of the youths at that camp is horrible beyond comprehension. Norway will never be the same. My thoughts and prayers is with the Norwegian people at this dark hour.

The police has confirmed that 84 have been killed at the youth camp.
They may still find more, because some people were shot while they were trying to swim away from the island, and the police are still searching for more bodies in the water.

Horrible indeed.

The news came out quite late in the evening in local time here. With the fact of two separate attacks both CNN International and the BBC were full of speculation about al-Qaeda, Jamaat-i-Islam, connections to the Danish cartoons etc. The last news I heard was that the suspect on the island was Norwegian-born: that's the way they described it.

At that point I flipped out a bit; "that's it, allow these people in, even have them be born and grow up in a Western state that gives them everything and this is the way they react..."

"Make them take loyalty tests, expel them, bomb their home countries...Oh."

Prayers for the souls of the departed and for their families today at Mass. There are 93 reported dead.

The news here on this side of the Atlantic is that this is a lone gunman of the Timothy McVeigh type (Oklahoma City bomber) acting out of an ideological manifesto published hours before the bombing (a diversion?) and the attack. I have seen no mention of his religious background, but the political aspects are documented: anti-Islamic, anti-Immigration, and anti-Multiculturalism. This is being labelled as an attack on the government and its approach to these areas.

it's extremely sad to see this happen. it's also sad to see how willingly media started speculating about fundamentalist islamist terrorists; instead it turned out to be a fundamentalist christian terrorist. at least here, his religious background has been mentioned several times and it seems quite clear that he calls himself a christian.

it sort of became concrete for me when we were going by train through finland, and everywhere, flags were displayed on half-staff.

my thoughts go out to everyone who was affected by this, be it directly or indirectly.

Yeah, I heard it on the radio - I don't know exactly how close to when it happened - it was about... 11:30 am here in the Midwest. But they played a recording of some guy telling how al-Qaeda had it in for Norway because of something or other and though I have no gift for understanding politics, I did think he seemed oddly convinced of it.

I can't imagine how terrible it must be for everyone over there. You will be in my prayers!

In the end it doesn't matter if he identified himself as a Christian/Buddhist/Follower of the Spaghetti Monster/Conservative/Liberal/Idealist/Whatever. He was a murderous mad man who committed a horrific crime, which is not an ideology that most of the things he could claim to be would support.

Tell that to the journalists! In particular Swedish journalists are focusing on the fact that he was right-wing extremist. As if it would have been more acceptable if a left-wing nut-case had massacered 85 conservative youths.

The news here (Midwest, USA) now is that 96 people are dead as a result of this atrocity. We also hear that people are still missing and they are searching the lake for those who are missing.

Our media has shown something from the manifesto apparently where this wing-nut (the best nomenclature yet) claims he's some sort of knight of some re-constituted order. That's the closest we've had on any "religious" affiliation.

Prayers continue for those who are gone and those who mourn.

The one positive is that the death toll from the island apparently is about 18 less then previously thought. But it doesnt really matter who did it or why. Instability in humans is a predictable truth that sometimes results in events of unthinkable horror like this one. In the US tragedies like Tucson, Fort Hood, Columbine, Oklahoma City and of course 9/11 have caused immeasurable anguish and we join with the rest of the world in grieving with the good and peaceful people of Norway in this dark hour. Think first of the dead and those who suffered great loss not who or what is to blame.
