Re: ?
Of course they're mostly superior, but we're comparing freeware to something that's nearly $200 plus annual maintenance. Actually, in this case there isn't much of a difference. The UBB requires your own server that has Perl on it (whatever that is) and knowledge of cgi scripts. It crashes just as much as ezboard. UBB allows greater customization of the board, but ezboard is nearly as good in terms of customization and is improving daily. Ezboard has personal pictures and a bunch of other stuff that makes it worth it. I also like how the version is updated automatically. That way, any new feature is instantly available to all users. But with UBB, they need to release a whole new version for the people to update, and it gets all complicated. Plus, the customer service here is incredible. I see suggestions posted and the next day they're part of the board. When suggestions are posted at UBB's equivalent of this board, people are told that "Ted [the UBB tech] has too many things to do" or "get a hack for it." Maybe one day, if we get a big enough user base, I'll save up enough for a UBB. But until then, ezboard is fully functional .

Re: ?
Well, technically those aren't the UBB's ads but the server's... it doesn't have to have ads at all.

UBB
Personally, I like the UBB better. But then I'm a Perl-head nerd who rewrote the whole thing to be how I like it. EZBoards are better value for money (duh), but UBB is more customisable. If you can be bothered hacking the Perl. One feature I have in all my (hacked freeware) UBB's is to allow admin HTML. EZBoard doesn't have that.

Re: UBB
UBB is good because it's easier to format to be consistent with the rest of whatever site you run.
However, I like ezboard better because of how the various boards are all connected (global users, rings, etc.) and a far superior "mark read" feature than UBB's cookie-based one, among other features. |
