Who here has read Roverandom or The Silmarillion?If you have, what do you think of em? Just wanted to know

I have read the Silmarillion several times. I found it to be very dificult the first time years ago. After the second time, it quickly became my favorite book by Tolkien, and that still stands today.

I bought the Silmarillion when it first came out. I had a tough time reading it, so never finished it. After rereading LotR last year I dug up the Sil. and finished it. I liked it so much I reread it a second time. Just like SGH, it is now my favorite book.

I've not read Roverandom, but I thought the Silmarillion was a great book. If you re-read LOTR afterwards you'll pick up lots of historical references, but in itself it's great; it's got wars, treason, romance, triumph and disaster, thousands of years, all in a book a little bigger than a novel.

I tried the Silmarillion but never got past the valaquenta. it is too hard and i havn't heard of the other book.

You can skip to Quenta Silmarillion without losing too much. I know what you mean, the start is a bit abstract, but once you've read it all you'l probably go back another time and read it again, so nothing's lost!

I read the Silmarillion! (Now let's see if I can spell it!

) The beginning was one of my very favorite parts. I also loved Turin Turambar and Beren and Luthien. I never read Roverandom, however. What is it about?

It's about a dog that is changed into a toy. He goes on a quest. It is short, but very strange.

I've read both. Roverandom is cute, I constantly wanted to hug the little thing. His encounter with the moondragon was my favorite part.

I agree. In a much different way, but the Silmarillion gives LotRs more depth. The Silmarillion is the best.

Like many of you, I am reading The Silmarillion after reading LOTR, and it is a much more difficult read the first time through. I have a particular problem keeping the elf-names straight sometimes!!! But on this second reread, the beauty of the language is really starting to show out to me.

I've read the better part of Roverandom. It's a delightful children's story, like The Hobbit, and like The Hobbit it can be enjoyed by adults, young and old. Actually many parts in Roverandom can only be fully appreciated by subtle adultlike minds, or like-minds that discover an inside-joke or hidden meaning, though it doesn't take away from the story if you don't catch it.

Roverandom is a VERY different book. I haven't read the Silmarillion yet, though.

The Silmarillion is the best of all the Tolkien books I have read so far. I personally find the beginning to be one of the best parts simply becaue it starts out with such massive scope and story. I wonder what it would have been like if Tolkien had lived long enough to publish it in the form he wanted to.
