The sleeping river
Did the Elves place a sleeping spell upon a part of the River Running as a defense?

Nobody interested huh? I think it's a good idea, but remember that the river is a long way from Thranduil's halls. On the other hand it does run out from caves under those hills and we know elevs have some command over water because Elrond caused the flood at Bruinen.

The river running?
I don't think so... The enchanted river that ran through mirkwood was a different river, wasn't it? And yes, I do believe it was the elves that had enchanted it. Who else could or would?

Well the dreams that what's-his-name had sure don't seem like something made up by the Dark Lord....

I think that the elves are very big on defence like the guarding of Lorien it was more then was apeared on the outside. And a sleeping spell is very much a Elf sort of thing.

Lothlorien and Mirkwood are two different places.

I don't think Legolas_BowKing was getting messed up between Lothlorien and Mirkwood. He was just comparing defencive messures taken by elven people elsewhere. Having an enchanted river would act rather well to keep unwelcome visitors away. There are other things than elves that could do it. It could be some nature spirit that enchanted the river.

The River Running was the River flowing into and out of Lake-town. The Enchanted River mentioned by Wayfarer is the River afro-elf was thinking of. Bombur was the one who fell asleep (and Bilbo and Thorin had similar spells later). I agree with the Insufferable, I don't see who else could have enchanted the river. The path Thorin & Company were walking on is labeled 'Elf-path' on the map of Wilderland. I suppose the Elves used it once and set a spell on the river as a defence against all those people not familiar with the region (all strangers). The Wood-elves were said to be suspicious people after all. Maybe in those days boats were always kept on the east bank of the River where the road passed, and Elf-sentinels stood there, sending the boat across to allies.
But we don't know how long the River had been enchanted, or I don't. It might have been enchanted by some being before ever the Elves came to that forest.

Yeah, and Bombur's dreams were suspiciously similar to the Elven feasts they witnessed later.

Something tells me that Bombur would have been thinking about food no matter what else was going on in the world

I reread that section of the hobbit today. Bombur's dreams were specifically of the elven people and their feast. Then later on, when the dwarves sent Bilbo to sneak up on the elves, Bilbo was caught up in the same enchantment. Heavy sleep while dreaming about the elven feast. I think that is deffinate proof that the river was enchanted by the elves.
