I too agree . . . also agree with olsonm that it would be hard to know if you'd like the movie if you hadn't read the books. One of my kids said that I read it to him years ago (I don't remember) and that it's so engrained in his personality that it's part of him. . . which is kind of cool.
I'm glad Denzel Washington won. He's a nice person.
I just finished reading the Silmarillion, didn't realize the elves were such a bloodthirsty lot: slaying people right and left just because they're ticked off. . . it clears up some things about the LotR though. But it's a grim book, as well as beautiful in spots.
