Riddling.

In keeping true to the tradition established in The Hobbit, it would seem that Riddling is in order! Forgive me if there is already a thread to this effect which I have not seen. I have spoken to many people, and one thing that most seem to agree with, is that the riddling was a wonderful key component of the stories.

And so, feel free to post your riddles! Trivia, original riddles pertaining to TLotR, riddles about yourselves in the manner of Bilbo when he encountered Smaug, all are welcome!

Here is a little one to start you off:

Beginning in the Leafed Lands,
First eastern of Eriador
Thrice found in stunning Greenwoods' grounds,
Second in South, to evil's door.
Twice battled in the Lands of Plains,
Once and once in Osg'liath's moor.
But ended with the sight of Seas,
Greenleaf's child, being of noldor.

Excellent, Khadrane! You unraveled that one much faster than I expected. Yes, it is Legolas. The key (other than the obvious references to location,) is, as you have probably already discovered, in the lettering. Beginning in the Leafed Lands: Beginning, so first letter, in Leafed Lands, thus L. And so on.

Hmm. I'll have to think of another. I'll get back to you on that!

My respects.

Oh, dear. I think I just gave away a key to many riddles I could have written. I'll have to think of something else now!

My mind is not being cooperative about writing riddles, so I will do trivia:

1. What two characters had a quarrel over who the fairest maiden who lived was? For extra credit, what did each threaten the other with?

2. Name three names each which Aragorn and Gandalf were known by, and for extra credit, list their meanings.

3. What day each year according to the modern calendar would you celebrate the anniversary of the fall of Sauron? (Hint: January 1st corresponds to Mersday, Afteryule 12th.)

Gimli, yes. Faramir, no. Sword and axe, yes.

All of the rest, yes!

Good job, Starr! I'll have to think of some more for you.

Yes, certianly I have more, if you want them! (There are ten posted on another thread: "Urgent help requested, please!!", if I remember right, which you might want to try your hand at.)

For now:
Movie-watcher's mind benders. In each of these questions, the movie was incorrect, or misleading, and so please give the book answers!

1. Who said, "A change is coming. I can feel it in the earth. I can feel it in the water. I can smell it in the air."?

2. Who did Arwen give her star-like pendant to?

3. How much time passed between Bilbo's eleventy-first birthday, and when Frodo left the Shire?

4. What was the force working against them when they tried to cross the Redhorn?

5. Who killed Ugluk?

More later. Happy guessing.

1. Treebeard, in ROTK
2. Frodo, kind of his 'ticket' to go to the Grey Havens, right?
3. 17 years
4. Sauron (?)
5. Gah...for some reason I want to say Shelob

Not too bad, methinks, for having read it only one time and not having the book handy

One through three, right on the nose! (Or beak, or snout, if you prefer.) Definately not bad! Four and five could use another try.

Congratulations on 500 posts! I'll be there someday, hopefully.

A few more brain teasers:

Theme: Location

1. Dol Guldar is in what forest?

2. What is another name for the Chambers of Fire?

3. Lothlorien is in what modern country?

4. Numenor/The Westeresse corresponds to what legendary realm?

5. Where was Strider raised?

6. In what Farthing is Hobbiton?

7. What wood lies north of Bree?

8. What kind of realm was Angmar?

9. What river did one traverse fo reach the Seas from the Grey Havens?

(Your turn! I want to try my hand at it! Joking, but do feel free to post any you want.)

Crimony... I'll stick with riddles, thank you. Here's a try:

Mercy unweilding
Pinnacle unyielding
Red at tip
With cold, cruel whip
No square of three
Could pass by thee

Pretty simple and easy, I'd say. These are fun to write.

Yes, these are very fun, aren't they? Let me see... Oroduin, perhaps?

Here's one for you:

Death comes without death
Light becomes dark, and dark light.
Living unliving in shadows by day,
Thrice three exist in the night.

My, you are well versed!

Set one:
4.& 5. Yes to both.
Set two:
1.& 2. Yes. 3. Well, that's about as close an answer as I am likely to get. Keep working on it. Take a few wild guesses. 4, 5, 6, 7: Yes. 8. Yes, but I was actually meaning in the title: "The (blank) Realm of Angamar. 9. Yes.
Riddle: No. Think, Nazgul Queen, think.

Hmm, I'll have to think of more soon!

*hits herself on the head*

Of course! How could I be so stupid?
The answer is, of course the Nazgul!!!

And is it the Dark Realm of Angmar? I know it belongs to the With King...

And Lothlorien is in New Zealand.... but its probably in Britain...

That's the Ringwraiths, Nazgul, what you will. Definitely.

Good job, Nazgul Queen... I nearly didn't see that you answered mine. I have to wonder why you didn't get F.B.-B.s'...

Here's another:

No clear descent
Nor from where sent
But there indeed

Yes, it's Tom Bombadil. Good form, my leige.

Here's another:

Out from the West
Predecessor blest
A fair pale glow
No kin to show
The heirloom of ancestry
Now shines inconsistently

This is a toughie... Good luck!
