I just saw the part today when Iw as watchin the extended edition...the whole reason for me watching was so I could hopefully cath a glimpse of the imagery that they were going to use...mainly Sauron's fair form "Annatar". I saw it on the web somewhere and wondered where they got that picture. However, I'm glad that they took it out b/c, like you've all mentioned, it would have gone SO far from the book...not to mention, when Numenor was destroyed, Sauron lost his ability to make a fair form as it was destroyed as well.
